I'm pleased to say I re-maidened the plane today at our club's winter fun fly - there was lots of new powder on the ground and the snow was still falling during the flight. A friend got some great shots.

Taking off

Passing in front of the trees

Moment of touchdown

Plowing through the powder

Another flying buddy helped me tune the engine - it ran a little rich but was otherwise great. I'm going to need a throttle curve - for most of the flight the throttle didn't advance past the first quarter and control was too coarse.

In these photos you can see my other mods for this winter...

The ski/wheel combination (could not have performed better - I'm very pleased).
The bolt-on wing was a big improvement in set up and take down and looks a lot better
The dual aileron servos allowed me to set up flaperons, but I only tried them high up - I need to mix in some up elevator.

A very successful flight, all in all!

There's not much left to do for the engine installation, but there's lots of work before this plane takes to the air again. Next up, a new thread - follow the link to Hobbistar 60 - Bolt-on wing conversion.

I installed a grommet in the choke bracket. I started by enlarging the hole in the choke bracket.

I was struggling to get the grommet in place when inspiration struck - the heat gun! Warmed up a little, the grommet became much more flexible and was far easier to work into place.

Here's the choke bracket with grommet, reinstalled.

In the odds and ends department, I took a few minutes to make a wire keep for the switch wires...

... and I configured the ignition cutoff on my transmitter.

Those wooden tabs don't look right against the black covering, so I covered the tabs too.

I also did some colouring with a Sharpie to blacken the wood in the notches and the tab ends.

That's better.

Back to the battery tray. The standoff glue is cured.

From the front you can just see the forward standoff under the tray. From this angle it looks like the tray rests on the receiver... but it doesn't.

The tabs stuck out a bit too far so both sides got sanded flush.

A little more progress tonight. Got the top of the choke bracket cut off.

Bracket and choke rod installed.
