Re: Alignment dowel question.

Thanks Phil if I can't get it together as is I'll have to do that, I'll go check out the Swift NX and see what you are referring to.

Re: Alignment dowel question.

You can easily exchange the old boom and tail gear case from the current Swift NX and it will all fit together in a scale fuselage much easier.

Re: Alignment dowel question.

Got all the dowels in now I have been making new tail linkage and freeing up the moving parts. Trouble with my vintage of Century is you have to feed the tail boom into the rear of the fuse and assemble linkage, servo and mainframe together while inside the fuse. Bit of a challenge hopefully it will be well worth it.

Got the first pin in now I'm waiting for it to dry then I can do the second one, I'm just so stoked because I may even get some success.

Re: Alignment dowel question.

I will use some more earth magnets I have then do as you say one pin at a time. Thanks Don!

Re: Alignment dowel question.

You will need to drill matching holes in the canopy and body first then install a pin and wood square onto the canopy where the holes are drilled. The ones in the main body should be oversized slightly. When you have all the pins on the canopy set to go, take one new block with a hole in it that fits over the pin and put Saran Wrap on the join. Glue the wood plate to the body and the oversized hole will let you have a bit of latitude to get the position perfect. You will need to work the upper pins into the wood after the glue has set so the canopy rocks out when you lift the canopy buy the underside of the nose. It is a good day process or more with Hysol or PL Premium. Don't try to do more than one at a time or you will regret it. Take your time and it will work perfectly just as the factory pre-painted bodies do. Enjoy.

Re: Alignment dowel question.

The Jet Ranger uses those pins set to three different angles. The two at the top of the doghouse are angled slightly upwards so that they act as a hook to hold the top tight to the body. The ones halfway down the sides are 90 degrees to the flange they are mounted on and the front single pin in the middle is 90 degrees to the flange it is mounted on. The middles ones are simply pins to hold the canopy from moving side to side but the bottom one is the one that must match the flange it is mounted to. The only way I knew how to set them up like the factory does is that I had a pre-painted body to go by. It is hard to explain but that is the best I can do. There is also nothing wrong with drilling all five holes parallel to the ground and the use really good magnets (add a couple more to the factory ones if they are installed) to help keep that canopy held firm. Good luck.

Re: Alignment dowel question.

It's at a slight angle so your wood block idea holds water. I don't have pictures as of yet I'll try to post some later. I was thinking make the wood block to fit the angle of one mating half then install pins in that one, line it up with the other half and draw a line where they meet. Then I could use the wood block for angle to drill the holes in the remaining half of the fuse.

Re: Alignment dowel question.

Do you have some pictures so that we can help you better?
Without seeing it you could drill a hole in a square block with your drill press and use that as a guide to drill straight holes in your fuse. The drill press would have to be checked with a square of course to ensure it is square with the drilling surface.
