Very nice!

It looks like your "unusual material" glider is turning into quite a project!

I've got my X-RES tail surfaces built but not shaped and the fuse almost built. The tail surface parts are beautifully made, you don't even need to build on the plan it all fits so nicely together. Best to take the pieces out of the sheets as you need them, using the map. A lot of those little parts look almost the same!

FabFlight Dam I'm proud of myself. I've built a full-flying elevator mount out of aluminium sheeting, piano wire, kevlar thread and thin CA. It's 4,0 grams. It could have been lighter but the aluminium I had in hand was a little thickier than needed. I've used Drela's plan found on CRCC web site.

Here it is installed on my scratch build UMS class ship.

Wow I'm looking to this with envy. I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun building this splendid kit.

Re: 2m RES wood glider kit for a change?

I just received my X-Res kit this morning! I am quite excited to have a balsa glider kit again. It was nicely double-boxed, and survived the trip from Germany without a problem. Customs need their PST/GST and fee though.

The wood looks excellent and it is all beautifully CNC machined parts, not laser burned. It has full sized plans on 30cmx42cm sheets, and comes with a DVD that has photos and drawings and the build instructions with many more photos for each step. The instructions are in German as expected, but with all the photos and some machine translation I expect it shouldn't be too difficult to muddle through.

There is a very complete accessory pack with CF and aluminium bits and bobs, including magnets for the spoilers or hatch, and an adjustable tow hook assembly already made.

The full flying stab system is much like the Drela V-mount design, except with 1mm CF vertical supports coming off the inside of each side of the fuselage rather than the V shape. There is a platform the stab screws onto, with wire hinge pins between the two. I don't want to steal their photos out of the manual, but I will take some of mine when I have it assembled.

There is a ballast system designed in, and instructions on making the ballast up. I think you have to provide your own lead.

I've decided to build two fuselages, a second one for an electric launch. I have some CF discus launch glider booms, and I'll build up a balsa pod. I have a mould for an Apogee pod, but I think I'll keep in the spirit of the RES class rules, and make a balsa pod.

I've got to scrape that Xplorer e-conversion off my bench to make room for my X-RES!

Re: 2m RES wood glider kit for a change?

Something like the one on the Stork would be a lot less drag. I'm going to hot wire an airfoil section, and layup some CF on the outside (vacuum bag) to make a pylon like this for my e-Supra. Take the foam out so there is room for the horn, and make a platform for the stab...

That sort of design will work on a round boom or a rectangular fuse. I'm not a big fan of V-mounts.

Thanks', this will help.
I also have Drela's reference plans (Allegro, Bubble dancer) but its designed for a round boom.

I haven't got the X-RES kit yet, but I'll post some photos when I do.

Here are some photos of the Baba Yaga 2m RES full-flying stab set-up second post on page 3 if the link doesn't take you there):

Kevin, could you post a few pictures of the X-RES stab mount? I want to build one for my UMS class ship (here and there) and would like to see how they did theirs, how they mount it to the wood fuselage.

Re: 2m RES wood glider kit for a change?

Yes I'm using a servo-type connector between the fuse and the center panel. Mine don't get disconnected too often because I usually leave the center panel on the fuse in the pickup bed.

Looking at the pins of the servo connectors, they are likely as good as the wires they are hooked to for current load.

I also have two sets of 5-pins multiplex connectors here. They have more surface contacts, likely more load capacity. I was planning to use them at the wing junction but found that they wee too stiff to get in&out for the fragile wing I had.
