Re: Large model certification.

Yup. It's all in Jim B's link... SFOC required and all the questions are there plus the insuring companies data must be listed also; pretty straight forward. Not an automatic shoe in as they must then give permission because if they feel it won't be a safe operation... then a no-go I would think.

35 kg = 77 lb. sounds like a pretty large model to me. But as the guys say, over 35kg and you're in Transport Canada territory. Not a MAAC rule but a TC rule AFAIK.

Re: Large model certification.

I think the biggest thing is to find an insurance company for required insurance. That would be my first step.

An SFOC is required for model aircraft with a takeoff weight of 35 kg or more. The SFOC can cover a single day, or multiple days if for an event.

To my knowledge, there is no MAAC "certification" process similar to the AMA's Large Model Airplane (LMA) process.

Re: Large model certification.

It's in the MAAC safety code. MAAC insurance is up to 35kg and that is all up weight including fuel. If over that you must have your own specific insurance for the model plus a TC approval exemption for flight , prior to flight.

Not too sure if the approval is for that day of flying , per flight or if an exemption is needed for each day.

Could it be a TC requirement?

Large model certification.

I searched the MAAC website and could not find any reference on how to get a large model certified. I thought way back in the stone age MAAC had a requirement that any aircraft over 50 lbs requires certification. What happened to it?

AMA has a excellent document that should be read and probably adopted by MAAC.
