Where we normally fly used to be a fairly high security training school for teenage boys (shut down about 7 years ago) with a huge soccer field around it. The actual school/dormitory has a 25 ft high inward curving security fence around it. If you happen to have a problem in the air space over there & go down inside you have to hope the local teenagers have recently made a hole in the fence that the security guards have not yet repaired!! I have had to crawl through a couple of times over the past two years. The Township bought the site from the province about a year ago & all the building/fence are supposed to be demolished in the fall. Other obstructions include the soccer nets (2 x 14 fields) & two lines of trees along the driveway!

Re: Interesting features at your field?

During our IMAC contest this past weekend, while I was scribing for one of the judges, a group of turkey vultures decided they would fly over and have a look see as to what was buzzing around their territory. I counted at least 6 of em! One competing pilot had to call a "Break" when they flew too close to his plane!

Actually, we have, what I personally consider, one of the nicest club fields in this whole area. Very wide open with only one tree that really doesn't cause a hazard, but that doesn't stop the odd pilot from challenging it. (Actully, this past weekend, it ate up a 33%er) (Not mine!)

The one thing that is most commented one at our club field is our frequency board. Designed and built by one of the members. You slide out the frequency pin and place your membership card into the slot. At day's end, we slide up the cover, that is cleverly designed with weights, to cover over and protect all the frequency pins.

Because of advancements in radio frequency technology, ie 2.4 Ghz, it doesn't get the use that was once so necessary and needed by all. But it is a beauty and a wonderful piece of design work.

Bears come across the field occasionally, deer quite often and geese/ducks during migrations.

We have the same wild life issues, deer, geese, bears, the odd moose.
One feature that I would bet is unique to our club is next door to our field is a Drive In Theater. We have a bit of a view of the screen through some small trees, for those evenings when the flying is done, and the B.S.'ing goes on 'til after dark.

now if we could only get the sound to go with the movies...:P

We fly off an ultra lite airstrip, on a 75 arcre farm, with nothing but wide open airspace. But about 2 -3 miles north of us are about 30 wind turbines.

Re: Interesting features at your field?

We have a pile of plane catching trees that were going to come down but recently three planes went into them and damage was minimal. so the trees will stay. great plane catchers. A couple would have been written of if the trees were not there. I wonder if we have a rare species of trees that would rather save a plane than eat it. Maybe they are balsa intolerant.

Re: Interesting features at your field?

Like Tyler P we have a plane eating gravel quarry at one end of our strip. Other than that we have wild turkeys and the occassional full scale plane or heli wandering overhead.

Well you probably won't believe this but at our flying field there are only two members myself and an old friend who got me into this addiction. Our field is right next to the town lagoon. We call it lagoona air field. Haven't put one in the drink yet and hope I never do.
