Re: prices for used gear at the london swap meet

I know alot of people go to these shows.. looking for the 1 great deal.. you know the one that has a 7 channel radio with a good plane( slighty dinged) and you can get it for $30
but in truth.. you pay for what you are going to get.. ( this is my thinking anyway)
when i go to these shows... i have a list of what i am looking for and anything else is extra
this show.. i went looking for a 7 channel radio ( for about $150-180) and i was looking for cf-100 planes.( found a guy who may have them..hoping he does ). I also wanted 2 batteries and some servos.. I got the batteries.. but not the retract servos...
so in other words.. i did not get all i wanted.. but i did ok.
this .. to me was a good show. does anybody know how the guy they took away by ambulance is doing???

Excellent Bryan! Great find!
I was able to get myself set up for indoor flying at a pretty reasonable price also, cančt wait.

Had a couple of friends along - they steered me away fom a couple of planes but didn't hold me back on the Tiger Moth.

Reminds me of the joke:
A friend will bail you out of jail,
A good friend will be there to say "we got to do that again"

Good for you, you oldie-but-newbie!

That's the perfect attitude to take with swapmeets if hyou've not got a lot of experience under your belt. Alternate woudl be to take along a good buddy who'll point out the good, the bad, and the just plain ugly.

Re: prices for used gear at the london swap meet

Not to argue the point too far but many of the planes, helis... etc. that are sold are built up from kits with electronics added. It does take some time to add up all the individual components to see what the actual cost of all the items are.

I will also add that many posts indicate the prices WHICH THEY PAID 5 years ago... well those prices have typically dropped. Unfortunately, like everything else, things devalue and just because you paid $100 for item A 5 years ago doesn't mean that's what it's selling for now. If in fact that item HAS dropped in price to say $80 but the seller still puts $100 in his post is he being misleading? I certainly think so, even if the seller isn't doing it on purpose.

In this way I also think it's the sellers responsibility to determine what the current day retail prices are and what those items sell for on the used market.

The number of times I see someone post "This is $1000 worth" when in actuality the current new retail prices actually only add up to $800 then yes I think that is misleading.

I've bought many things online and in 90% of those cases I pay what I believe is fair value and both the seller and myself walk away happy. In some cases I find a great steal but I also recognize that it IS a steal and don't use it as a tactic to get a lower price on a similar item later on.

Re: prices for used gear at the london swap meet

I'm a newbie when it comes to this stuff but I've learned that if I don't know the prices to a) check retail sources for new prices and b) ask someone if it's not clear. I've also been told that I should wait for "the auction" to further learn what stuff is really worth.

I should also clarify, having sat on the receiving end of a retail counter for too long. I know when people start telling me what things are worth, I tend to become a bit of an immovable object. So as a result I try not to tell people what I think the stuff is worth when I'm buying I prefer to ask them what's the best they can do. I also won't haggle on the best they can do. If I don't like what I hear, I just move on.

If you read all the posts here I think you'll find that most of us agree that experienced people would do exactly that. The concern sometimes is that newbies will get fooled into thinking it's a good deal due to the description without knowing what they're getting into. I know that it's buyer beware but as this is such a small community I think that it's part of many peoples idea that the more experienced people look out for those new to the hobby. That's just my opinion and I do that for my personal friends who always ask me whether a deal is any good before they pull the trigger.

Re: prices for used gear at the london swap meet

Sure is a lot of gyrating about pricing these days...

There really is a simple solution to this, if you think something is over priced offer less. If you're not buying the item because you feel it's too high, the sellers asking price really isn't your concern.
