You know it's right when you are flying your plane with a big A$$ smile on your face

like you said: sound, idle, transition, temp and performance.
Generally ,
Timing too late - louder and crispy sound
Timing too early - vibration from mid to high rpm.

Retarded timing will make the engine run a little hotter. Average and a good starting point is 28 degrees advance. 5% degrees on either side results in very little rpm difference.

How do you know when your ignition timing is just right?

Without onboard telemetry to advise operating temps.

Would you go by performance/power, smooth idle, smell, temps, sound???

I am not referring to setting up to manufacturers spec but rather to a preferred operating characteristic when fine tuning.

is there any real harm done being too retarded other than the power loss?

Also I understand that the timing for a DA150 is sensor mark at leading edge of magnet when at TDC, can anyone confirm this?
