Re: X-Cell 60

Flying weather is finally showing up (missed one good day from being busy with other things), and after a year of searching, I FINALLY found the Magna-Pipe for my X-Cell. It's finally done in classic trim.

Yup, should be here this week and I can get it fired up again for the weekend.

Bummer Dave, were you able to find parts to fix it?

Re: X-Cell 60

I actually had a minor mishap with it last week. Something felt a bit weird on it and as I went to turn left to bring it back around, it didn't respond. Full left stick and it was actually starting to slowly rotate right. keeping it level I brought it down quick, a little too quick, but it stayed upright. I buzzed the tail blades on the asphalt and bent the tail output shaft. A bit of sanding to the blade tips (the original plastic ones) and rebalancing took care of that, and I'm just waiting for the replacement shaft to come and I'll get it back in the air.

The cause, anyone familiar with the X-Cell tail rotor will know that it's not hard mounted to the output shaft. There is a damper between the hub and the output shaft and the two are held together by a pin that goes through both. A setscrew in the output shaft holds the pin in place. Well, I guess not quite snug enough and the pin started sliding out and had slid out far enough that it was binding the tail rotor when trying to turn left, hence not responding to the left command. If I had tried releasing the left command and attempted right, I may have lost the pin entirely allowing the tail rotor to fly off which probably would have ended up in a much bigger mess.

Re: X-Cell 60

That's so nostalgic! That was the first heli I had nearly 20 years ago. It even had a wooden servo tray! Lol

I still wish I kept it

Definitely wanna see some finished pics.

Re: X-Cell 60

LOL, ya, kept it old school, although I did toss on some carbon blades because I had won a gift certificate at SHAG last year. Also upgraded to a torque tube as apparently the Futaba 701 doesn't like a wire drive tail.

Now to get the Rappy 50 going. I have a FBL head for that and a new Fusuno canopy was delivered today, but I'm in Saskatoon for training until tomorrow.

Re: X-Cell 60

FINALLY got around to the maiden flight(s) today. A few minor tweaks to the control sensitivity was about it. No surprises, motor is running great. It was a bit breezy today, but it still came home in one piece.

Re: X-Cell 60

YAY! Tail vibes are gone. I went over the whole thing once and found a few loose screws solving the vibes, time to go over it again and make sure before taking it out to the field.
