The hatch in the back is not original to the plane and was something suggested by a member in a build thread on rcgroups.
There must be a hundred or so modifications people have done to this plane and all are pretty slick.

Originally the hatch was for the battery pack and by placing it there you ended up with an almost perfect balance.
I didn't want to put a Life battery back there so I opted to make the lead weight and mount it there instead.

It didn't seem to matter where or how I mounted everything else, I still need almost 4 oz of lead in the arse of this plane.

Horizon says it did some more testing and found that you could move the cg almost an inch forward so that you would not need as much weight in the tail but since they didn't tell anyone what testing was done to arrive at the new cg number I opted to keep things at the original numbers.

I can only assume that a more forward cg would make for a more hands on model if that makes sense?

oops - sorry merv - my bad. Now that I understand I'm actually thinking seriously about it. Not sure I could find a cowl that would fit but should be able to make a couple of curved pipes that resemble turbine exhaust. Possibly bent copper pipe with some heat marks on them. Interesting. Thanks for the suggestion.

No, no! You misunderstood me. Leave it all as is except to put a cowl on it to "look" like a turbine. With the big exhaust out the side. The electric sound will be close to correct.

Looks great Bill.
Your going to have a blast with this plane.
I would probably glass the motor box just in case. Mine wasn't glued together very well but I'm running a Gas motor as well.

Moving along with the assembly, took some more pictures to show electric setup. I can move the 6s 5000mah battery 4" fore or aft to help with balancing, I lucked out using the supplied standoffs with about 1/4" between the front of the motor and the cowl. The motor is a HK SK3 5055-430 on a HK Blue Series 85/100 amp ESC. For a while I thought I would have to enlarge the cowl opening. Had to cut a hole in the top of the motor box to gain access for running wires, might reinforce it but it may be ok the way it is as the box is very stiff. Aileron and flap servos installed and tested, motor tested for rotation, more servos were ordered to finish rudder and elevator. I am not going to glue the canopy on but copy another RCC'er and use screws so I can remove it for ease of mods or whatever.

One of the wing tabs on mine failed. The cheap plywood just delaminated and crumbled. I don't bother with either one now I just push the wing up tight to the fuse and run a strip of white electrical tape down the crack and peal it back off at the end of the day.

Yes the tailwheel failed and had to be upgraded.

I have bent the main gear twice on dumb thumb landings but it seems fine if you don't bounce it in. Larger wheels may help that too. You will need more clearance to run a 14" prop.
