Re: Why The Local Hobby Shop is in Trouble...

you know what, in many ways this is a very interesting topic, but my local hobby shop is the post office and there's no way of getting around it without driving at least 90 or 100 miles. Postage - $10-$20, gas about $75. On the bright side, 2 R(egional)Hobby shops have tried to be very accommodating to my needs. The closest one to me, unfortunately is a dirt RC guy, but I keep checking on him - just in case he see's the light and takes to the air (j/k)

Re: Why The Local Hobby Shop is in Trouble...

I have found out over the years through experience about mail order problems i have had and for me they are over.I support my local hobby shop everything that i purchase comes from avf hobbies in london which is one hour drive from my home. They are competitive with other businesses. If i find a price that is cheaper in Canada they will match that price. The service is great. If they do not have the product i am looking for they will order it in.Usually 1 week or less they call me which is long distance that it has come in and that i can pick it up at my convenience. They have a well stocked shop.I am very fortunate to have this shop fairley close by.Support your local shop there are many reasons why. Also these fellas are hobbyists themselves.

Have you ordered a product from mail order that's been damaged. You paid top dollar for it it should be in perfect condition. Now you want to send it back. Its up to you now to pay the shipping and possibly insurance to send it back.

Then you can get the scenario where the owner wants to cut adeal with you then you have to repair it yourself.

Then you can get this one lets say you pay $40.00 for the item but if you return it he will offer you $30.00 for a product that was supposed to be free of defects .This is a few problems i have dealt with.

Advantages from purchasing from lhs

You get to see the product first hand if it is damaged they will look after it.
they will get you the product free of defects at no charge to you.

-No dealing with mail order individuals
-No insurance charges
-No postage charges
-No cutting deals on merchandise that should have been defect free
-There when you need them

I like to support the local hobby shop. I always shop there first. The first thing I ask is "Have you got ________.'. The second question is "Can you get _______.". I buy my fuel there, it is a little more expensive, but I know it is good quality. Being a smaller shop there are some things he cannot get at a reasonable price. When you need help the guy behind the counter in this shop knows what he is talking about.

I have a buddy that rants about stores like some of yous guys. He goes in and asks about stuff and when serious gets a list and pricing for a wardrobe. He then takes the list and shops online to save money at some place called hobbyville or somthin in china using his dads credit card. He complains too with locel hobby shops being dum. He's kinda of an a-hole doin this but he is still my bud even so. Once he had a problem with the china stuff and asked the hobby shop guy to set up his gyro which he did for free. A-holeism sounds contagus these days

Re: Why The Local Hobby Shop is in Trouble...

I'm hearing pimarily 2 complaints here:
#1 Quality vs price ballance on product
#2 Quality of the next generation of worker (these are entry level jobs!)
These problems are prevelent in every phase of the retail market.

My opinion.
WE ARE THE VICTIMS OF OUR OWN SHALLOWNESS & SHORT SINGHTEDNESS!

On #1 As a society we have chosen quantity over quality. (how many of us would be content with 1 or 2 nice planes?)

On #2 As a society we have abandoned teaching our children life-skills work ethic & respect for others to pursue 2,3,4 careers/household to buy bigger, better more of everthing.
So the tide has turned! The chickens have come home to roost!
Unless we as a society our prepared to change our priorities --- more of the same!
SO SUCK IT UP PRINCESS!!!
Excuse me, I have 4 planes to finnish before I start my 2 new projects & spring is just about here!

I have a friend who was a very successful salesman all his working career. He said the three most important things in business are "service, service, and service". Having said that, the prices must also be competitive. The better the service, the most chances that customer will return. Now, one must also define "Service"

CBC financial analyst said on the news last night that exchange rates will be near parity with the US for the next three years...and prices will go down this year...for those complaining about prices not coming down soon. He said the days of 70 cents on the dollar with the US are over.

Markup and margin are two different things, the amount of markup determines the margin. To make 40 points you have to markup 66%.

On the contrary, I went there expecting to do business and would most likely have purchased a heli or other aircraft, some supplies at least. I'm not, by nature, a 'browser' or casual shopper; I've always got something in mind but if the staff is busy, I can entertain myself for a good while.
