Here is what you might end up with,as each half of the wing mount box is formed, assuming you split the saddle. The red line is the split

hard points for the struts,as in Martin Rousseau's Beaver, would work nicely to give that additional strength. He ran aluminum plates across the fuse and leaving holes for the strut ends.(I used the same idea in my Twin Otter plan)

It might just make the wing assembly unwieldy for transport, nothing more in terms of advantage or disadvantage.

Re: 1/9th scale Twin Otter build under way....

Alex my wing is already built as one piece wing. I joined both halfs and then added 1/4" plywood spar that also acts as a wing joiner brace. For my application my method will work the best in my opinion. Others can do the wing as how they feel n find best way to mount them. Yes without any question struts will carry a lot of wing weight n in my case will become weight distributers with the fuselage as I'll make them functional wing struts.

It will be easier to make the whole shape in the epoxy and cloth, and then dissect it to your needs, than to make two separate foam blocks and cover that in epoxy. My own preference would be to split the wing at the fuselage side, insert wingtubes and threaded parts in the large epoxy part. Then ,make the inner wing fit on the male tubes and mount that along with servo lead connectors, electrical plugs etc.Dont forget that the Strut support carries a great deal of the load. The two inner wing haves, along with the engines or motors, nacelles and the wing mount block become one strong unit(about 4 ft long?)that is just bolted in, in the wing socket and hooked into the upper main gear fairing.

This is pretty good idea you have suggested. I can improvise on it by making dihedrial slot in this foam saddle section and then cut it in half longitudinally so lower part would become part of fuselage and upper section will become cover of the wing joint section. I see no reason why wing can't be screwed on another added brace ahead of the originally designed one.

Why not just fill in the uneven part,in the saddle, and then build your new saddle with the 2 degrees dihedral?.Basically, make the wing saddle as a unit, shaping the rear appropriately, and then insert wing tubes, etc,to mount the inboard wing.If you wanted, make a square block of foam to prototype the saddle area and sand it to suit, then cover with epoxy and cloth, and remove the foam with acetone. You can then cut it to suit where you want.

Do you think by cutting off stabilizer saddle on the premolded fuselage and making you own base there gave whole ampanage more structural strength that will hold both horizontal stabilizer and vertical fin together with rigidity?

Did you added and structure inside the aft fuselage to stiffen up that whole section?

Re: 1/9th scale Twin Otter build under way....

Nathan I still wondering what's the best way to mount wing on that wing saddle, like you see saddle's base is not exactly shaped as the lower part of the wing's airfoil which is causing one of few issues here. I think if we got with +1 degree incidence on the wing, that should be good for these models. I don't have H9 Otter or info on it's wing Incidence as that would help here. Apart from this, partial filler ribs will be needed to flush wing with fuselage from LE till about 1/3rd ways down to the centre of the wing rib. As for the TE wing saddle section, I am thinking on adding balsa blocks cut and shaped to fill that area with ply sections for wing to be screwed down to the fuselage. Once this is done, then making sub over wing fuselage section is easy to build as build up or even from the foam!.

I'm thinking on making both wing struts functional so they will be taking weight of the OB wings instead of just being there for show purposes....What do you think?

Re: 1/9th scale Twin Otter build under way....

On my 1/9 plans built DHC6 I built up around the wing saddle with solid balsa. The front g keys in with the dowels, and then the rear has wing bolts recessed. Its a bit square in the saddle area and not quite scale, but it works for me.
