yeah more lucky to hit the springy soft brambles too.

have the wing rebuilt now, just need to recover the underside of it, and glue on the tail feathers. Also need to made new landing gear strut somehow - alu bar stock?

lucky it is only heavy damage to one wing Rest of the plane mostly OK. Oh and I lost one of the gear legs.

We figure it was inadequate gluing of the CA hinges on the elevator
Oh that sucks! I can see from the flight stick that you were giving full up when it descended into the bush. Luckily it wasn't a pure vertical descent when you lost the elevator

Oh crap man hope you can get her to do the flat spins sin how.
I have done very little work with balsa but enoug to know it is very time consuming

Re: PA KatanaMD aerobat FPV project

46" wingspan.

the normal non-FPV build comes it at under 1Kg with 2200mah 3s. Mine was 1.2Kg before the crash. I think it gained 150g or so after the rebuild. So lost a most of the infinite lightness of the oem Katana, and not as capable now. These 3D plane are very sensitive to weight when it comes to doing extreme manoevres. It flies more like a traditional or scale RC aerobat now, which is OK for me.

but I really want to find a way to make it do flat spins!

and as you know having done many FPV projects in wood and covering yourself ... balsa/ply planes are a pita to repair. This is only my 3rd balsa-ply FPV project, and already had to spend maybe 20 hours repairing it

Re: PA KatanaMD aerobat FPV project

I think you were puposely looking down on the cockpit a little more on this flight just to keep me happy!

I love how the sun shines through the underside of the wings when you go inverted and the ribs and spars shine through

What is the WS of that Katana? I've been wanting to do that myself but the only aerobatic electrics I have is a Nitroplanes Sukhio which is about 1200mm (?) and my massive Pulse 120. Im sure the pulse will fly better, but if I ever have an "oops" moment doing low-level aerobatics, the Katana is more likely to survive

Re: PA KatanaMD aerobat FPV project

thanks Joe. Unfortunate that you to get a bit of illness from fpv flying videos. Such a fun challenge to fly these plane from the virtual cockpit. The headtracking takes some practice and getting used-to though - especially with an aerobat on high rates.

But now I am spoiled by this plane. My other planes seem clumsy and boring in comparison!

Re: PA KatanaMD aerobat FPV project

Nice flight, I wish I hand the internal fortitude to maintain integrity while doing stunts from an FPV standpoint. I have no problems with G's and inverted as long as it's synchronized with my inner ear, but doing that with goggles from a stationary position, I'd have to have a bucket to catch all the internal organs that I'll expel. LOL

(I get sick with FPV Video games).

Coolness.

Re: PA KatanaMD aerobat FPV project

OK I ditched the CMOS crapcam. Put on a trusty PZ0420. Ditched the cluttery OSD, put on E-OSD

soo much nicer to fly now! Nicer field of view with 2.8 lens. Clearer and better light handling.

Now I need to work on tightening up the controls. The rudder is feeling too spongy and she won't enter a proper flat spin on command.
