Re: Century Swash Problem

Wow, clearly not Century's fault here (at least it doesn't appear so), and they're sending replacement parts for a 6 year old heli anyway. Find another company that'll do that! That's customer service!

And stuff like this is why my first heli will likely be a Century.

Offers to help and also offers some replacement parts to make it better. You can't ask for better service than that!

Re: Century Swash Problem

As this was an older Hawk Sport from 2004, that had been flown by someone else a number of years ago, and as this has never been an issue with these tail rotors, I must assume that at some time in its' life it had had a bounced landing, that had resulted in the tail rotor contacting the ground or some other hard object. Also, as it had been sitting for a number of years, the bearing may have devleoped some rust, further weakening it.

Also note, that your swashplate issue was caused by you having installed longer ball joints, that had threaded areas that where too long, into the inner star. That certainly was no fault of the heli.

I mentioned earlier, that from your picture, your washout hub assembly needed to be flipped over (note the orientation of the assembly in the photo of one towards the end of this thread). This certainly would have caused the binding you reported after your rebuild.

If you look closely;

Housing - Inner Race - (Bent) Washer - Bolt

I cant see that detail on my computer, sorry, I assumed the bolt broke. So the bearing inner race must still be on there as well?

I dont think its a plastic issue - the bolt appears to have broken.

It is very possible the bolt was improperly heat treated (I see small machine screws/bolts/etc break all the time sometimes with little torque applied) and just an issue of bad luck.

81 flights in approx. 250 ounces of fuel = 3 ounces per flight... that would average 4 to 5 minutes on a .32 size engine per flight. Its possible, if you always flew 1/3 of the tank and called it quits.

Back in my previous helicopter days, I had a JR flybar (brand new) split in half and part ways with the heli, cost me $800 in damage. I have had a very beefy left/right cyclic pushrod fail on the same heli, cusing another crash. I have had parts fail on my Kyosho machines (had 3) and also once on my Schlutter Magic. Sometimes as good as things are made, it only takes a single bolt to let go or break, that costs you half a machine or more.
