Re: LHS - are they really that good?

It depends what I'm buying and how fast I need it.

When I flew helicopters 20 years ago, I pretty much supported the local shop completely (Elmer's RC Helicopters). He kept a complete line of parts for the helicopters that he sold. More than once we would be out flying, have a little mishap and just meet at the shop to get parts so I could be flying again the next day. The shop is no longer in existence.

During that time, another shop, Hobby World opened up and has since changed names to Redline Hobbies. Henry has been a great guy to deal with and with reasonable pricing. He's been around long enough that he has a pretty good stock and I usually check to see if he has what I'm looking for. Sometimes the prices are a little higher, but that's when I weigh in shipping and convenience of having it now.

Now we have the recently opened Remote Control Hobbies. I've wandered in there and looked around a couple of times, but there's nothing in there that is really interesting me at the moment. That I attribute to the store being new and it will probably change as time goes on.

Do I order online... of course. Sometimes the online deal is just way better than the local guy can provide.

TP batt shows one in online stock

The one you linked is 50C, not 65

This is pretty close.

Whether or not you can get a swap out from GH for a bum unit is only slightly relevant. The odd time it does happen with HK you have saved so much over the last dozen or fifteen that were just fine you just throw it in the garbage.

That's the big picture, I can afford to toss the odd DOA in the trash. Doesn't work with all items, but the ones it does work with I buy HK. I bought my DX9 at the LHS. Would not have bought it from HK even if it was sold for half the price. But I refuse to pay LHS prices for batteries if there is an alternative. Nano-Tech are very popular, dependable, and deliver mucho performance around our field with big percentage of fliers, even 3D heli 500/600 size etc.

GH batts have a bad reliability record around our field.

Re: LHS - are they really that good?

What a ridiculous comparison!!!

First that tp bat isn't even available at gh anymore.
Second, thunder power bats actually carry a multi year warranty, you don't get that in any other brand, you pay for that warranty, third I doubt anybody who has flown both wouldnt say they are equivalent.

Try something apples to apples, instead of picking obsurd ones like this.
This would be the closest at GH,

http://www.greathobbies.com/producti...d=TGHL50005C50

$114 and hst with free shipping
Vs
$88 plus shipping and hst/brokerage and bullshit from HK global
Vs
$91 plus 24%(includes hst/brokerage) plus shipping from hk USA

Even if you take the 45c price at hk for the same pack config, the price after all the extra are hardly different!!! You know its coming in a couple days from gh. If it does work or balance you can return or exchange with gh.

Please stop talking crap about the huge differences!!!

Re: LHS - are they really that good?

Hi All,

As a kid, I learned to make a list of what I wanted. Then rode my bike (1hr trip) to the LHS.
To this day, I still keep a list in my pocket, and save $ each week, for the hobby I enjoy.

Local Hobby Shops are part of my hobby.
I like holding something in my hands, and asking...How much?
It is not like 10%+/- price difference will change my mind.

I have been to dozens of LHSs around the GTA (Grosser Toronto Area/the Golden Horseshow)...

Everyone, has had a thing on my list.

I keep asking my 'HobbyKing' buddies...
How Much? To order this for me?
Never a reply.

We will all become our own hobbyshops?

I have my list/cash,
I love this hobby !

See you at your LHS...

Take care,
Have fun,

Re: LHS - are they really that good?

We are fortunate in the GTA, there are many LHS's around. However, I still find it hard to find what I want. In most cases one of the shops will have the item after extensive searching. The only one I wouldn't go back to is Zoomroom. I drove to Zoomroom to buy a plane only to realize I had left my wallet at home. I bought a few items, including a plane, from them recently. I had almost enough cash and was only $5.00 or $6.00 short, the owner wouldn't sell it to me. They were already $10.00 more than other places to start with. So I asked if he would at least price match, he said no. I wasn't rude or anything. Anyway, that was 2 weeks ago and I've spent around another $1500.00 since then. Obviously business is great there, they don't need my money.

Re: LHS - are they really that good?

The old saying "you don't know what you had until it's gone" would apply the all LHS. The LHS gives the consumer options. Seems most replies here see them like a convenience store. Merchandise is more expensive than on-line, hmmmm, maybe not depending on what your shopping for.

The is a heck of a difference in shipping cost for a 3 cell Lipo vs a 30cc airframe!

Re: LHS - are they really that good?

One thing not mentioned here about the overhead a local hobby shop or any retailer has to contend with is dead stock. The shop owner has to pay for what is on his shelves whether the item sells or not. Yes he can buy a 100 foot roll of covering for 88 cents a foot and sell it a foot at a time for a buck and a quarter. Big profit, right? But how about the 88 dollars he has spent, hanging on the wall? How long will it take for him to sell 70 feet off that roll before he makes any profit? Like the man said, how do you make a small fortune in the hobby business? Start with a large fortune, hang it on the wall, pay the rent, wages, taxes, utilities and on and on. until he sells that 70 feet of covering. then he can roll in the profits.
The only way an outfit can hope to survive is to have a large enough customer base to be able to sell that 70 feet of covering in a reasonable length of time so that the overhead is not eating up the profits. The local hobby shop is hard pressed to have that large a customer base serving only the local community. Therefore the mail order/internet is the answer and the ones that have realized that early in the game are the ones that have thrived, case in point, great hobbies. The other way to lower prices is to not have to pay a large amount out of the profits on wages, case in point the HK suppliers. Do you think you in Canada could feed a family on what one makes as a wage in HK? Even there the workers in the warehouses are probably only making "minimum wage" for their region. So do you think they have the best and smartest people working in the warehouse? Do you think they have your best interests in mind?
Anyway, enough of my ramblings. Just to explain why the local hobby shops are struggling to stay alive amid all the competition.

Re: LHS - are they really that good?

Will I grew up in a small town in Newfoundland where we never had a hobbyshop even close by.My first seeing a rc plane was on the Beachcombers one episode.I try to support my LHS here with the stuff I can use but lots of times I have to purchase online or here on RCCanada.

I know what you mean about Marystown, and it hasn't changed. I grew up not far from Marystown. I was just back home this summer, and there is still not even an R/C magazine available. I have done lots of research and it's still not feasible to start a shop there. The 2 small shops in the city of St. John's can barely survive, and as far as I know, they are the only 2 in the province.
