No one saw or heard him coming! There were at least 3 models in the air at the time!

He was close enough that several of the guys recognized his face as a member of thier model club! He knew we were there and did it on purpose!

Yes close calls DO happen & not always in our control!
That guy should have had a visit from Transport Canada. That was stupid and reckless... and possibly illegal.

Heli pilots rarely fly above 1000'agl. They get nose bleeds at that hight!

We fly in Gimli MB right next to the airport and right next to the cadets glider school. Depending on the wind they can be turning over our heads for final and being gliders you don't even get the opportunity to hear them coming. With that said we have never had a close call and are always looking out for them. Anybody seeing them will call out glider whether they are spotting or not. No need for any RC flyer to get close to a full scale.

At the Canadian IMAC Nats this past weekend out in Arnprior, Ontario, I was judging the Advanced class when the pilot and myself had to call avoidance for a full-scale plane. It does happen occasionally.

Hope smarter heads prevail next time.........as long as there is potential for a next time.

A couple of years ago at another local Calgary club we had to put in place special rules relating to a full size pipeline inspection plane that flew over our field (at about 400' AGL) every day. In that case it was an inadvertent close call (R/C pilot flying alone - wind blowing pretty hard into the face of the R/C pilot - full size plane came up from behind him - he did not hear it coming!) Regardless, full scale planes trump anything we do!

Does Airdrie have rules requiring a spotter for every flight?

Re: Ok, who did it??

Fairly high for an RC, and fairly low for the full scale. I think legal floor is 500' AGL is it not?

Anyway, for a giant scale or a glider it's not really ridiculous. Giant scale planes aren't even getting small at that height, and gliders commonly fly well over 500' AGL.

That said, most folks see a full scale coming anywhere near, and get the hell out of the way. I'd hate to hear of one of our toys colliding with a full scale and hurting anyone. Not only for the sake of the guy that gets hurt, but you can bet the gov't will step in if anything happened. Bad joojoo.

Re: Ok, who did it??

The chopper's altimeter read 4300 feet ASL (above sea level), not AGL (above ground level). Airdrie is 3,573 ASL, so the chopper was only about 700' AGL. Still pretty high for an RC plane, though.

Re: Ok, who did it??

Yes, 4300 as referenced is ASL. The incident would have occurred at about 500 AGL. For those not literate in aviation terms that is ASL - above sea level, AGL - above ground level.

Pretty easy to break 500 feet with a model aircraft!.

Re: Ok, who did it??

I'm assuming it's 4300' ASL. Wouldn't YYC ensure traffic keeps a bit of distance from the club?
