Re: Idiot drone pilot and lipos...

Gawd frickken damn.

I travel with my helis all the time.
My last trip was 3 weeks ago to the UK, I brought 4 22003S Lipos and 3 4502S lipos

But I always bring my batts as carry on. In a liposafe bag. Lipos as checked baggage is a no-no

So far its NEVER been a problem. Sometimes they open the liposafe bag and take a look. Sometimes they wipe the bag with the little pad and check it for explosive residue.

I hope this kind of disaster doesn't affect those of us who travel with carry-on batts

Re: Idiot drone pilot and lipos...

Before this discussion gets off the rails regarding what, where and how LiPo and Li-Ion batts (hobby/drone specific) may be transported on commercial passenger aircraft in Canada allow me provide "the" facts. As a former professional UAS/drone pilot (Operations Manager, ING Robotic Aviation) who travelled and worked nationally and internationally with UAS equipment, I am intimately familiar with battery carriage regs. Also, I was a member of the Canadian Aviation Regulation Advisory Council where this issue was a frequent topic of concern and discussion.

First and foremost, for the purposes air transportation (other means as well?), Li-Ion and LiPo batts are classified as Dangerous Goods.

The ICAO standard by which all (most?) commercial passenger airlines abide states that LiPo batts must never be transported in the baggage compartment of an aircraft. These batteries must be transported in your "carry on" luggage, however, the maximum energy of each battery is limited. Each battery that you carry must not exceed 100 Watt Hours (Wh) of energy. The Wh of a batt is calculated as follows:

Wh = (v) X (Ah)

* For example, I'll use a 2200 mAh (2.2 A), four cell LiPo
* A four cell Lipo has a nominal voltage of 3.7 x 4 which equals 14.8 volts
* 14.8 (v) X 2.2 (A) = 32.56 Wh

32.56 Wh is well under the 100 Wh maximum threshold.

So, the question becomes how many of these batts may you carry on board? As far as ICAO and Transport Canada (TC) is concerned, there is no stated maximum number of individual batts (as long as each individual batt does not exceed the 100 Wh energy rating.

To muddy the waters, I will say that TC does stipulate that "With the approval of the airline, lithium ion batteries that have a Wh rating of more than 100 Wh but not exceeding 160 Wh may be carried as spare batteries in carry-on baggage or in equipment in either checked or carry-on baggage. No more than two individually protected spare batteries per passenger or crew may be carried." So, the maximum sized batt that you may take on board is a six cell 7000 mAh battery and only two of these may be carried.

* (6 cell) 22.2 (v) X 7 (Ah) = 155.4 Wh

Air Canada allows these larger capacity batts to be transported on their aircraft, but only as carry on and only with the approval or their Airport Agents. There are additional safety precautions that you must follow including, but not limited to ensuring that each batt is protected from short circuit and individually packaged. Also, depending on the airline, there may be compliancy declarations that you must provide at check in.

The best advise that I can provide is to speak with your airline's rep before you take a trip with your batts in tow. It would be a shame to show up at the airport with a couple of hundred dollars in LiPo batts only to be turned away or to be required to dispose of them before being allowed to board.

To get back to the subject of this topic, I will say that the individual who recklessly allowed his LiPos to be loaded as checked luggage should be fined and banned from flying on commercial air carriers for an appropriate period of time; his actions bordered on criminal disregard for human life.

Everyone is calm, just stating their opinions of the idiot in the article. Unless you are a fortune teller and can see the future, you have NO idea what this incident is going to do to shipping of lipos around the world. It may do nothing, or it may cause even more problems for us in the hobby.

It's much like the idiots that are flying drones and quad copters unsafely around airports and other no fly zones. Eventually the governments are going to say enough is enough and deal with it harshly.

Re: Idiot drone pilot and lipos...

yes. but a lot of folks don't know the protocol.

1/ carry-on any RC lipo batteries
2/ carry them on only in a lipo safe bag
3/ declare them
4/ expect to be taken into the bomb sniffing room. swabbed for explosives residue
5/ be courteous with the people at the airport

I recently did a trip to europe. 7 separate flights. Carried on 4 1000mah batteries, in a lipos safe case. Each time security did remove them from my carry on handbag and questioned me, but only in Frankfurt did they take me to the bomb sniffer - took like 3 minutes and they were nice about it.

I figure a guy like that should be put on the no fly list. He outright lied on his declaration and this could have had catastrophic results.
