Re: Boomer Torus - Arrived!

Here's a couple of still pics after the maiden flight at Whidbey OLF in Washington State. Lots of room there!

Next plan is to fly off grass at a local field with short runway/approaches which is where this jet should accel.

Sorry, no video, in fact no camera - had to beg another pilot for a pic.

Re: Boomer Torus - Arrived!

We have some plowed runways here but last year when we tried to fly jets at below zero the pumps seemed to really struggle. I'm not sure how the guys in Iceland/Norway etc fly from those ice runways. The turbines do run but the fuel viscocity seems to change or maybe the gear tighten up. The pump settings will not settle down to a stable idle or run... Maybe there is something guys add to the fuel?

Anyway - check out how much snow in my front yard HA HA!!! Its was about 3 ft until I shovelled the roof... it's melted about 1/3 since this pic. It will take 2 weeks of +10 to melt it and probably five weeks for the fields to be flyable.

Re: Boomer Torus - Arrived!

Hey Chris,

Sorry to hear about all the snow. They were predicting a harsh winter here this year and we've had next to nothing. Kinda wierd tho, Saturday it was 7 ish and sunny and today it snowed (wet) and was miserable.

Sure was nice to spark up the Hammer 170 though. My trigger finger was gettin' itchy.

Re: Boomer Torus - Arrived!

Looks good Paul. We're months away from flying here - I have mountains of snow in my yard still and it's still super cold.

Hard jet wheels and mud are not a good match - I discovered this last year too in the spring

Re: Boomer Torus - Arrived!

Managed to make a trip to Ridge with Kev-o for the maiden. Everything checked out o.k. and the IQ Hammer 170 was yankin to go....

Problem was, the wet coast is still alive and well. The grass was just some green stuff hiding the 6" of mud underneath it. In spite of our efforts to find a high spot, the plane just dug three nice 1" deep ruts in the mud and was NOT going up. Backed, off, shut her down and headed home for the day. Jeez, 75' take off run and it took me 2 hours to clean up when I got home.

Oh well, at least I got a pic of her all set up at the field.

Will try another field this Saturday if the weather co-operates.

Re: Boomer Torus - Arrived!

8711's are way overkill for the stabs, so if you're concerned about the torque, 8411's will be more than enough, they're not super big elevators. I know you have the 8711s, but that's way more than needed for any of the surfaces on a boomer

Re: Boomer Torus - Arrived!

Well, I've found the first "issue" - not a problem though.

The horzintal stab is tapered as most are and the servo hatch is quite close to the rear of the stab. I was planning to use a pair of 8711's and they're too thick. Maybe 8411's - dunno at this point but just a heads up for anyone. I took a quick look at the wings and they are o.k. for both the ailerons and flaps.

I checked the specs and 8411's are 2mm thinner than 8711's so this may be enough.
