Don't let technology leave you behind.

Aaaaand before you go there, my first car was five speed manual and I have two motorcycles, so I can even shift with my toe.

Re: Safe technology

It's a line from when I started in this hobby, and is still valid today, even with SAFE technology..... "Fly three mistakes high". That's the regular first mistake, then the second mistake as I try to fix the first one, then the instructor grabbing the radio (pre-buddy-box days) and saving my bacon and the plane.

The only time when three mistakes high didn't work for me was when I was at the Oakville north field, practicing snap rolls. Right wing failed (poor construction and wood selection on my part, but the vendor did say that using hard balsa spars was OK and this was the fourth model that I'd bought from him....)

As we (Jim Eichenberg and I) watched the plane spiral into the swamp off of the field, he nudged me and said, "Aren't you going to throttle back a bit right now?"

Don't think that SAFE would have been able to save that one.....

Flip side is that it will tend to support more aggressive flying skills -- the line "I'll just flip the switch if I get in trouble."

What happens if the system fails and you have to do it yourself?

Like the new fully-computerized car systems -- if the onboard computer fails, your backup is Shank's Mare... http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-sha4.htm.
I use it for learning, BUT i also think twice before using it too. I-e i'm nosed in inverted and need to make a correction, i say A do i need to bail out ? or b i can fix this with this input.. Most of the time it's a fix this with input.. BUT those cases where you are unsure or lost orientation it sure helped me a few times..

Re: Safe technology

I still don't see 'water wings' as cheating, it gets beginner flyers out flying, not repairing.
Dihedral is for beginners too, have we had that discussion yet?
