Re: Yes, another Hobby King thread.....

Over the past several months, I have spent considerable time into researching opening up a "local online" store.

I have contacted several overseas companies, and there are at least 3 reasonable streams for importing RC products into Canada.

My biggest issue is competing, price wise, with the overseas stores. When I factor in shipping costs, storage costs, web page maintenance fees, ETC, ETC, ETC, it would be impossible to offer competitive pricing.

I know MOST people would complain about paying locally more for something they would be able to order in from HK themselves.

Most people would not factor in the appropriate costs associated, and feel that local prices should be pretty much in line with the overseas dealers.

Regardless, we would all have to realize that there is no way prices will be the same in Canada, as they are in China. So those whom think it should be, get off it already.
Shipping costs $$$$$..........period. And then there is all the other associated costs like warehousing, staff, etc.
If one was lucky, it would be close to the same pricing once as if you ordered from HK direct and paid shipping. But most likely would be higher than that.
The only real benefit would be the convenience factor, nothing more. The warehouse would never stock everything that everyone wanted, so therefore still would get flamed.

Re: Yes, another Hobby King thread.....

I'd like to offer my perspective here because I find many people don't seem to understand this. I was running an online shop selling model planes before I came to Canada. (I am still running it BTW.) I often had some US customers complaining about the high shipping costs. They don't realize the high shipping costs are more than set off by the cheap prices of the products most of the time.

Let me illustrate this point with an example: Say someone in BC wants to buy a Winners Model's 39" EPP 3D plane from me.
The price in China is $51.97, the price in Canada is $89.99. To get one such kit from China, using Hong Kong Post's large parcel service, the shipping is $34.33 while using China EMS, the shipping is $43.74. The customer probably can get away from paying GST for this purchase. So the customer pays $86.30 or $95.71 to get the kit. In contrast, the cheapest shipping from where I am to the BC customer is $28.28, and with $10.80 GST, the customer would pay $129.07 for the kit. Therefore, you can save over $40 for a foamie if you choose to buy direct from China.

Sure, you will wait a little longer for the kit shipped from China. You'll get the kit shipped from China in 7-10 days if all goes well, or get the kit shipped from Ontario in a week. I was mainly selling airframes, so if there was a defect, it was easy to see. So I don't ask my customers to send back defect products, just replace them. Lipos are tricky because many problems can be caused by the inexperienced user or careless user. You cannot easily tell whose responsibility it is when a pack is puffed.

Oh no they wont. You guys need to read the HK forums to keep up to date.

Anthony Hand has said the Canadian Warehouse is postponed indefinantly and that he is looking into supplying Canada thru the US warehouse, and THIS WOULD SUCK TOTALLY!!! Say hello to UPS extortion fees, Duties, 15% taxes, and weeks for the product to clear Canadian Customs.

Haven't taken a close look at all HK has to offer. I hear lots of folks load up on their batteries though.

One thing they have coming I'd love to get my hands on: that Lancaster that's coming out soon!

Canada makes everything. From toilet bowls to those Blackberry pagers. We even have a Lithium battery plant in B.C.--that won't sell to you unless you want a million dollar order (fair enough).

I burns my azz that in a country like this, any sort of simple gadetry (and yes, *all* RC gear qualifies as "simple" compared to the Blackberry!) cannot be made and sold here.

I'd gladly pay $50 for a battery, ESC etc made here, than pay $10 for the same gizmo made in China (for ONE buck!), plus $40 shipping to get it here.

Sound reasonable?
I salute your patriotism, but the simple truth is, it may not be economically feasible to have some of this stuff "Made in Canada". Yes, it will be more expensive. What good is making something when you have to sell it 4x higher (in this example) than a similar product that is currently on the market?

While you may feel comfortable "paying more" to "buy Canadian", I am willing to bet those that are tightening their belts and watching their pennies due to other economic reasons, will buy lowest price in order to make their money go further.
