Re: Buying LiPo's cheap in Canada

Here is the Dynatron Starter with the two 3S lipos in series. The tray also holds the two glo drivers one short one long, a plug wrench and spare plugs. The black box on the back with a push button is 12 volt power supply for an electric fuel pump. I also make these aluminium caps for the fuel jugs because I got tired of fuel going bad when left on the shelf. A Viton o-ring seals the bottle. Most of the time my glo require just the starter/batteries, the fuel jug/electric fuel pump and I'm good for the day. It doesn't get much simpler than that. Oh with the 22 volts the starter will do the 50cc and under gas.

Aha! I use very old Zippy's also but I use them to turn over a 12 volt torque starter on my glow and also as a source for the glow starter when I fly without onboard glow!

If you look at the Thunderpower lipos and check out the version (generation) you will indeed be surprised at the age of the packs. The 2S 480’s never came with balancing jacks then. These all started out in brushed motor setups. Even our indoor at the time (2004-2005) used brushed motors with gear box on a stick mount. The 2300 3S packs were used for a brushed glider setup. I haven’t had any of that equipment for some time as I moved to all brushless about 2007-2008. Since that time I have used much smaller and lighter batteries for my indoor and larger higher capacity for my outdoor. The four Thunderpower 3S 2300 have been powering my Sullivan Dynatron Starter and still do to this day. In series two provide near 24 volts with more burst amps than any NiCad setup could at a great weight savings.

If my packs are not to be used on a regular basis I do keep them at the recommended storage charge. My shop is heated and air conditioned so the batteries never experience extreme temperatures.

Yes it may be time to get rid of them but me being a tightwad I hate to get rid of something that still is working. I don’t use them for flight packs any more haven’t for a couple of years but they still take a full charge and run the expected amount. There are just lighter more powerful options available.

Yep out of all the Hobbyking stuff I found the Rhino and A-Spec the best of the bunch but take a look at the last picture you will note the gassing of those two compared to the Pulse on the right. All three flown in the same two airframes with the same motor/esc combo.

Understand everyone’s battery needs will be different. If the power system you are flying has a low draw in the indoor/foamy/parkflyer class and you do not change anything the recommended batteries will work well for you. As soon as you start changing things your batteries may end up being the weak link. A parkzone setup recommending their 3S 2200 pack and the recommended charger is a good match but as soon as you decide to put a more powerful motor many times the esc starts to give you issues so that is upgraded. Not many at this stage give the batteries much notice but now the draw may be too much and they puff/fail.

Plug and play systems are great but most end up wanting more. When you do that you need to build a balanced system matching the motor/esc and battery. This is where many fail.

Like most of you I like to support my local hobby shop and since there is none in my immediate area that stocks the supplies I require mine is in the US which is 20 minutes away. I try the batteries/equipment he carries in stock. He carries Flightpower but the availability I needed was sporadic. He recommended I give these new ones he was stocking (Pulse) a try. The Heli guys were raving about them. I know they put a work load on their batteries so I gave them a try and have come away with a very positive opinion of them. Not inexpensive but reasonable for my needs.

As to who makes the cells it’s like who actually makes the motors we use who can say for sure. If a certain brand works for you then it’s the right choice for you no mater what the cost. Cheap or expensive if it leaves you wanting it’s not any fun. When I go to the field I want as few hassles as possible so cost is but a small factor in the fun quotient.

Anyone been riding motorcycles for a long time? Remember the emergency tool kit? Yes it had the necessary emergency tools but how did they work? Better to make your own tool kit up with brand name tools, spend a little more but when you need them you can depend on them to do the job.

Hey Dennis,

The biggest batteries that I use now that I got out of land RC all together are 3s 2200mah. I have only had a few brands...all of them budget brands except Parkzone. The funny thing is that I've puffed 3 of the very expensive Parkzone lipos but none of the budget ones. I'm also very careful with my lipos...never over discharged, low charge rates, etc.

That said, I'm not in any way disputing your findings, just saying that you don't always get what you pay for. I believe the Parkzone and a lot of the other pricier lipos are just re-branded budget brands. I do believe there are some really good lipos out there...like you said Thunderpower, and I bet other premium brands like Flightpower are good as well.

Since we are on the topic, I believe the Revolectrix batteries are reasonably priced and supposed to be of good quality. I keep thinking that I will try them next but like I said my current stock of lipos just keep going flawlessly!

Re: Buying LiPo's cheap in Canada

You can say all you like but if I had used a Canadian supplier - just a transaction,,however,,picking up stuff from private sales and yes a few HK LIPO's on a trip to US a few days ago..sitting in Alki Park in Seattle watching the ferries etc. and getting a tan, then walking around Washington Park Arboretum and looking at all the cherry blossoms, and green grass..Oh and did I say getting a tan 18-20 deg C and the sun WAS shining
Excellent hotel 71.25 US a night with free excellent breakfast and newspaper and.... but hey I could visit Winnipeg for $130 CDN a night. Gas $2.56 US a gal.(3.78 litres)

Sometimes it's not about the money.

I have a number of HK lipos that have worked very well for me.
When I compare the GH prices and HK prices even with the new FedEx shipping from the US with the extra import fees and exchange rate the HK batteries are still a better deal.
If you order just one or two HK batteries then no but if you order half a dozen then yes its still cheaper from HK.
Two Gens ace 3300 3S and a Team great Hobbies 2200 3S ... tot cost $128 cad shipped, taxes and insurance. Did the numbers out HK and much higher after FedEx, plus FedEx brokerage charges , plus US exchange rate... don't worry I do the math.
