Re: Hinging 1/8 balsa

I'm with mwavesdave.
Monokote hinges all the way on anything up to 60 size.
Works real well and you don't have to shape any edges if you don't want to.
Great on sailplanes too EASY PEASY!!!
Just finished up a ninja with them and they pretty much disappear.
Very much the same as sewing but no holes.

Re: Hinging 1/8 balsa

After worrying for a long time, I bit the bullet and started to sew my hinges in a zig-zag pattern. Free moving, easy alignment, and easy to do.

I'm happy with hinge tape on smaller electrics, not convinced on larger planes, especially gas/nitro. I've got monokote hinges on all my nitro/gas sport aircraft, up to a 60cc biplane. They simply do not fail, ever. I use the style nick lists first in his post, and highly recommend it. Do it right, make sure the surfaces are completely dust free, and you'll love the results! Simply adjust the size of the hinges to suit the control surface sides, a minimum of 5 hinges per control surface, preferably more. Hinges on my 60 cc bipe are 1 1/2 inches wide, as an example, 1 in on my Ultra Sport .40

There is also the 3m hinge tape , called Blenderm tape , used for small foamies that really sticks and I feel is more durable than using covering material ironed down. Very flexible stuff. Not saying that covering will not work but just another alternative.

I am aware of two different ways of making hinges in Monokote.

1, Works well on round hing areas.
Get 2 strips, inch wide and long enough to span the hinge length. Iron sticky side to sticky side overlapping a quarter inch, cut into strips about 1/2 to 1 inch wide and iron to your hinge area in alternating patterns.

2 - Works best on single bevel hinges.
Place both surfaces face to face with hing lines aligned. iron an inch wide piece of Monokote over the entire hinge line. flip over and iron another inch wide strip on the other side.

I second the monokote hinge for that type of plane.
