Re: People selling JRs and Spectrum radios

Same take on it here. That was just one mans opinion with not a lot of respect in many corners. I had the DX7 when they first came out and flew it about 4 yrs without a glitch. Sold it to another club member when the DX8 came out. I bought one of the first DX8s that came out with all the teething problems. Had to send it in and bought another used DX7 off one of the other club members to use in the interim. Got a new updated DX8 trans, thanks to Leading Edge Hobbys here in Kingston. The DX8 is working great but I'll keep the DX7 for a foolproof backup.

Compared to PPM, DSM2 is far from junk, how quickly we jump on the fanboy wagon. People have been blaming radios for their own dumb thumbs/poor maintenance, lack of understanding brown out etc. since we wound our first escapement rubber bands....

My experience (and that of many others) is that DSM2 is far superior to the last generation of PPM, and fully expect the next generation to leap this now comparatively older technology.

Having spent many weekends at large events, I see more DX7s than all other radios combined ... haven't seen any crashes attributed to radio failure. I can't say the same from pre DSM2 days.... I've been flying DSM2 for several years now and plan to convert my old 1/4 Tigermoth (currently PCM) to DSM2 ... I didn't make that decision lightly.

First of all, yes we read the same article, and secondly, I am not jumping on any fanboy wagon, I am simply stating MY OPINION from my experience and from reading about these radio systems before I drop some coin on 2.4.

From the article, if you would like to read it again, in the footnote section, granted he didnt say "junk" he said 'crap".

Well I'm sorry to disappoint but I simply call a spade a spade. DSM2 *is* past it's best-by date and is no longer suitable for noisy environments but DSMX is an excellent replacement.

Surely, the very fact that DSMX even exists is proof that there was some truth to my criticisms. If DSM2 was without fault, why replace it?

Despite what has been claimed, I have no agenda, I'm not on the payroll of any other manufacturer and I don't have a grudge against Spektrum.

I'm just following the policy I've always held: When something is good, I'll tell people and, when it's crap, I'll tell them that too. Plain and simple!

End quote.

Re: People selling JRs and Spectrum radios

This thread is getting interesting, however I can sum it up quickly.

There are people whom have used specktrum without problems, and those whom have had nothing but. It happens. However, with all the "recalls" to fix glitches and problems with spektrum, including the new DSMX system, would you trust your plane to it?

Even when you read the article that 1THEPALMER supplied, the author clearly states that DSM2 was junk and at the back of the pack when it came to radios. It also states that the new DSMX system which is now a hybred of DSSS and FHSS systems is alot better then DSM2, but still, would you trust that track record to your hard work and expensive model? I know I wouldn't, and won't. I would rather go with a system that has proven itself time and time again.

Now this is just my opinion from taking in all the information found via members and online. Bottom line is, trust what you want, use what you want, but if it goes down in flames, your the only one to blame for trusting it.

Only thing was a firmware update to make it a 14 channel radio with some extra features for free!!

Tough call though?!?!?

Re: People selling JRs and Spectrum radios

Had one of the first DX8s when they first came out and because of the problems, they replaced it with the updated version around April. No problems with the new one whatsoever. Many flights and 22 planes programmed into it including a 1/3 and a 1/4 scale. Our indoor planes are mostly BNFs and only Spektrum/ JR will work with them. About 28 fliers registered last Sun.

Re: People selling JRs and Spectrum radios

I'm not sure the sales are a result of people jumping the fence; although sometimes I wish it was true. It's funny that almost nothing would please me more than everyone getting fed up with DX "whatevers" and switching to something Futaba. It's getting lonely here in Futabaland, lol. It would come as no surprise to me that we will all have to fly Spektrum one day whether we like it or not.

Most people buy what works for them and stay within that brand and move up and down within it. I think Futaba is the cat's meow because I've never had trouble with it. I've considered buying JR and Airtronics too. Nobody can dispute that they make great stuff.

Regardless of reputation, QC issues, etc, many in our club are going to Spektrum. BNF aircraft are becoming very popular and use Spektrum gear, so the pull is hard to resist.

You have to be a real die hard, masochist to wear any hat that doesn't say Spektrum on it.

Re: People selling JRs and Spectrum radios

I have used a JR12X for about three years now. NO issues! I use good quality batteries (redundant), good quality switches and I load test and ground test before the first flight each day. On my IMAC planes I put in close to 200 flights each year. JR DSM2 systems work just fine...

My only comment on Futaba radios is that Chad Northeast - Canadian F3A champ for many years) flys Futaba. It obviously works for him!
