Easy to keep score on a piece of paper for a few for informal competitions.

The Altis 4 works well, and does logging and telemetry as well, and ALES or other type of competitions:

Or the CAM F5J is very simple:

Thanks for a great idea.
At first I wondered why I would want such a device.

I too have come from a youth of gliding using hi-starts and winch's. Electrogliding has made it so much easier, but also has taken away some of the edge of only getting "1 chance" that we had with hi-starts and winches.

But the more I thought of this, the more I found it appealing. A personal challenge just like golf. Sure, you dont "need" it, but having would give me a challenge on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Gonna get one too

Re: Is the art of gliding dead?

I have to agree that I see no true soaring at our club, but e-powered gliders are still very popular. I used to love the hi-start and even feared our winch a bit....but the pure challenge of sustained flight was wonderful. Now I have nearly zero equipment to bring but my glider, radio and several 1300mah packs. Quick zoom to height then enjoy some thermalling with all the fun and no risk.

Re: Is the art of gliding dead?

I get more soaring done now, than I did when my knees were 30 years younger. I would slog around a hi-start all afternoon, and be happy to catch one thermal. With my electro-gliders, I can cover more country, and find more lift downwind with no worries.
Soaring flyers are scarce, and always will be.
