Re: Cleveland 1/4 Gotha G.V

its been a while but yes this project is alive and well!! The wings have been re-designed by a very talented friend from across the pond. The wings will now have a 12mm wing tube and be removeable just aft of the engine nacelles. Looking forward to getting all the parts and starting the build again!

Re: Cleveland 1/4 Gotha G.V

The Gotha has always been a long term project for me. The plans were blown up to 1/4 scale so there has been a lot of re-engineering etc. lately. I am in the process of re-designing the wing ribs to better support a 3/4" wing tube on the main spar and rear spars.

Thank you for the very kind words. Let the real truth be known, I have been secretly learning from you! I do enjoy the little building community gathering we have started. Its a chance to learn new ways of doing things and to talk about model aviation in general.

Any updates on the Gotha? It has been quiet a while since there have been any posts.

Gotha looking great! I've been fortunate to spend some time in Scotts shop, building a DR1. I've watched the Gotha take shape from the planning stages to where it's at now and he has done a terrific job. It's truly an impressive project and a big undertaking.
I've learned that Scott has a passion for the hobby that only a handful of individuals possess and I can't come close to matching. In addition to building his own projects and entering scale competitions, he selflessly spends endless time helping out friends and strangers with the same interests. Throw in MAAC and juggling commitments to work and family and the guy is BUSY.
WW1 was his main interest since we first brushed shoulders and It has slowly rubbed off on me. Hence the Ziroli DR1 project. Thursday build nights have given me the opportunity to take advantage of his building knowledge, and to hang out with other club members looking for assistance or just to B.S. I highly recommend other guys try this approach, We have had a lot of fun and it promotes the building aspect of the hobby.
I look forward to witnessing the completion of the Gotha, and thank you Scott for your generosity. - Steve

Finished the rough work on the front nose/gunner turret. This is and iconic part of the Gotha so it took a few attempts to get the shape correct. It is 1/64 aircraft grade plywood wrapped around for the cone and balsa sheeting. I fiber glassed this area and filled any imperfections. I will detail it up in the finishing stages.

I built the tail skid assembly using brass plate and 3/16" steel rod. The rod extends into the fuse and into wood blocks. The skid is fully functional with a bungee cord that will be attached later.

Finished building and setting up the struts for now. These will be glued using JB Weld and pinned during final assembly after covering.

Re: Cleveland 1/4 Gotha G.V

Started working on the tail struts. These will be airfoiled aluminum. I also added the 10/32" wing bolts and blind nuts to hold the stab down. While I did that I also put in the carbon fiber rods that position the vertical fin.

Re: Cleveland 1/4 Gotha G.V

The nose cone/outline is definitely a stand out feature on this model. I have spoken with Greg and we both think mine is going to be a little bigger. Greg's Gotha is 1:4.5 and mine is 1:4.
