Re: Wings Over Gatineau (Vintage Wings Canada)

I'm glad to hear that you understand that I'm trying to be helpful. I spent the entire event trying different shutter speeds for the prop planes, and blew a lot of shots trying very slow speeds hoping to get some nice background blur panning shots. I went as low as 1/60 for the afternoon Snowbird take offs & got about 2 decent shots from the set. I found 1/400 was the max I could accept but spent the majority of my time between 1/200 & 1/320 sec. and even that seemed a bit too fast for the Hurricane. It must have a slow revving engine. I shot the jets at 1/1000 which I now think is too slow. One other thing to keep in mind for the prop planes is that they run full power on take off which can allow a slightly higher shutter speed but once in flight they back down on the RPM's.

Hopefully I can get a good discussion going on how to shoot planes, both R/C & full scale & I'll start with what I know about my gear (Canon) and why I use each specific setting. Unfortunately Canon specific terms will be different than Nikon's or the other brands which is why I'd like it to be a discussion rather than a "How To" based on what I do. I'm just a serious amateur trying to do my best but I also try to help others anytime I can.

Thanks all for the nice feedback. And thanks Larry for the suggestion regarding shooting prop planes.

The camera I am now using was new to me this past spring. I am still working on figuring out the best settings. And yes, I went straight to program mode so that I could control things the way I want to.

As you noticed, most of what I shoot are RC jets, where you do want a fast shutter speed. It had not occurred to me at all that I would want the props blurred on full size pics. I'll be sure to try a slower shutter speed next time I am shooting prop planes.

Having fun!

What I like is how well the pics fill the screen and the sharpness of detail. Never concerned me about the props until it was brought up, as everyone knows they are turning. You do a great job too, Cicopo.

I fully agree with that and I'm just trying to point out that you can't rely on any camera to get interesting photos just because it's a "good" camera. Relying on Program mode or Sport mode can be very helpful in a lot of situations, and many will be happy with the results, but when they show someone else their prized capture they may not get the WOW they expect. In Jim's defense it looks like his gallery is primarily of Jet photos, and I don't see anything recent (R/C wise) of prop planes, so faster shutter speeds are mandatory, & it's very possible he'd get better results with higher shutter speeds than Sport mode might select.

I'm working on a rough draft of how I shoot prop planes (Wings over Gatineau was my first real full scale event) & I'll try to start a discussion in a thread dedicated to the topic, hoping others will share how they do it & what equipment they've found works well.

Photos are nice & crisp, good lighting & good angles. Very nice! Not going to get hung up on prop blur; I'm learning that it takes practice to get that *AND* not sacrifice the other qualities.

Jim, those are great photos, thanks for sharing. Planning to hit their show next year myself! Who knows... maybe they'll convince the owners of that shiny new Mosquito to make an appearance...

cicopo - Good advice for a technique to work on: low shutter speed + pan is tricky for some of us, though. Just one comment about the Lockheed photo... I'm not seeing even a blur from the props. Kinda the other extreme. A different example might have been better...

IF we don't strive to get better why do we ask for advice? I may not be much help with flying advice, electronics advice, or many other areas of this hobby but I'm still trying to improve in any field I explore. Just like I don't know what's required to do a knife edge pass even though I've watched hundreds performed I do know how to photograph a plane in flight & hope to help others get better at it.
Thx larry! those are great captures as well! Your advice is is paramount for guys like me!

cheers!
