Re: Top Flite DC-3

It's amazing how resilient the DC-3 has been. Not overly happy with the proximity of the elevator and rudder controls, I'll put a couple of pics up later, but have a workaround figured out. I'll have to double check plans and instructions as well, again, but not sure what TF was thinking with this setup. I've got the fuel line I need, and more servos. This week I'll try to get the fuse completely finished, rudder and elevators connected, cockpit, etc, then I can set that aside and finish the wing.

A buddy of mine works at Kenn Borak Air (sp?) in Calgary. They have a DC3 that is put together from the remains of a few different airframes. They recently discovered that the tail section was from a plane that flew on D Day! Pretty cool to see these old workhorses still earning a living! Your project is coming along really well!

I'll leave that to someone else, this one's an RAF C-47.

Re: Top Flite DC-3

Well, air lines are good to go, engines installed, working on the nacelles, but I need to pop over to our Hobby Shop Saturday, and get a pile of fuel line. Once the lines are run, I can finish the nacelles, and wing centre section sheeting. Still have to locate the throttle servos, and flap servos as well. the 3 flaps are done, and hinged.

Working on the elevators tonight, bit of sanding to do, cut slots for the hinges, and they'll be ready to cover and install.

Not that I know of, but certainly would be nice. Same with the Robart .60 sized 90 degree rotating retracts, I really wish they'd go electric with those.

Following along with great interest, nice work! I wonder if anyone has tried to electrify the retracts as per the larger scale (1/4) size ones?

Re: Top Flite DC-3

Lot of work going on for the wings. Aileron servos were taped in place, and extensions run, prior to sheeting the top. Once the sheeting was on, I then cut undersized holes for the servo hatch. Used the hatch as the template for cutting the final opening. Air lines are all run and connected, next step will be to rig the servo and valve, and mount them. Engines are a pair of OS .46 LA's, while a bit on the high side for power, should allow for a 3 blade prop setup, as well as a bit of extra power for glider towing duties. Fuel tanks mount in the centre of the wing. TF assures us that the distance isn't an issue, I'll be sure to do a lot of ground testing of that prior to first flight!

Back on the project, so pics soon. I've managed to get the bottom of the wing sheeted, and now working on flaps and ailerons. The pile of balsa shavings this kit produces is pretty amazing! lol. I've got another member of our club working on a Scale Waco Glider for me to tow around. That should be rather interesting, to say the least!
