GY520 or GY401

I'm looking to upgrade gyro on my Blade400. Was looking for a GY401 but I'm also considering the GY520 since it weights less. I would like to have some comments regarding the 520 since it is fairly new...
Planning to use with a Futaba S9257.
I'm not doing agressive flying but I want something holding pretty well.
Thanks!!

There is no comparasin. The 401 is a good gyro, but the 520 is in a completely different class. I have used 401, 611, and 520. I would say the 520 is as good or better than the 611.

I use the 401 on my B400 and it is rock solid.

HUGE difference between the two, if you want a gyro you can take from that heli and get rock solid all way up to a 90 sized heli then go with the 520 as the 401 will NOT be rock solid once you go with a larger heli and can do any demanding 3D, period. :)

You took the words right out of my mouth, Shawn

That is probably why the 520 costs more.

They both will hold solid in the hover and through many maneuvers, but the 520 will deliver a constant piro rate in the more demanding 3D maneuvers, and will hold the tail from blowing out when the rotor speed bogs a bit throgh some of these maneuvers or in fast backward types of flight maneuvers where the 401 will be a bit wanting.

And in smaller helis, it even has a big size/weight advantage.

Personally, I would avoid Futaba.

The Align GP750 works better than a 401 and is less expensive (about 90-100 used, shipped, or new out of a kit). It's easy to setup and has seperate left and right limits (which the 401 lacks).

My next option would be the Spartan DS760. They sell for about USD 180 with the programming cable or 150 on sale or from HobbyK...com

The support from Spartan in terms of firmware upgrades or direct user support is fantastic. Just look at the Spartan thread on helifreak.com With Futaba, it's non existent. Their customer support has gone down hill over the past few years (not to take away anything from their design and products).

The programming interface for the Futaba GY520 (a must) is pretty pricey.

============================

Now you did mention a Blade 400. Do you really want to spend more on a gyro than the rest of the heli is worth? Did the stock gyro fail in some way? You won't get Porshe performance out of a Ford Fiesta by putting a Porshe engine in it...

If the stock gyro has failed, then I would lean towards an Align DS760 (lots of them sold on Helifreak from guys that got it in a kit but don't want to use it). I paid USD 85 for my last one (new, never used).

What servo are you planning on running? Digital of course (the stock E-Flite servos are not digital). Again, try to keep things balanced. You don't really want to spend $90 on a tail servo for this heli. Also think about how it's going to be mounted.

===============

In regards to the post above, it's my experience that no gyro will hold the tail of the main rotor starts to bog. All gyros need a relatively constant tail rotor speed, or at least a controlled increase or decrease in RPM.

Ultimately, there is some sloppiness in the design of the Blade 400 that no gyro can alleviate.

don't get either, buy a xmhobbies g401b. Hold as well as a gy401 and it's 36 bucks

Re: GY520 or GY401

Which servo do you suggest to use with the g401b??

Re: GY520 or GY401

use hxt900s, they are hands down the best servo bang for the buck. they are only $4 each and many people replace their align and hitec servos with them because the performance is so amazing for the price.

good luck
