Mounting recievers
 

Hello all, rescently I was mounting some recievers (spektrum) to my airplanes. I like to munt them on the sidebof the fuse for simplicity.
Everything is easy to access, and the antennas are easy to rout. I either mont them with stick on velcro or fom tape. However, they are not very secure, and I am always afraid that the rx will fall.

Does anyone else mont there recievers this way? Any tips on how to make it secure, but at the same time not permanent?

I find that double sided tape sticks to the receiver great, but not so much to wood surfaces. The instant cure is some CA on the wood side, then no problem, they're not coming off.

Yeah, thats probably what I will do. I tried hot glue, because its really easy to remove, but a the same time it also is very weak.

I guess that with the CA I can always take off the reciever, and if I really need to get the foam off I will use CA debonder.

For some reason the foam tape does not stick to wood very well. When I used velcro, the stuff stayed on the wood well. Even hot glue + the sticky stuff on the tape was not enough.

I hate working with CA, but unless anyone has any other ideas, this is what I will do.

I don't like to glue receivers.
I always set them in a foam "tray" and use an elastic over the top with a bamboo skewer underneath.

There are other options. One would be to bond a piece of lite ply to the balsa to provide a good surface to work with. If side mounted I support it away and run self fastening velcro, (the type that loops and sticks to itself) around the top of the Rx to help keep it in place. You can see that in black holding down the watertight Rx compartment in the Seawind.

I avoid the foam type double-sided sticky tape as the adhesive layers seem to last, but the foam can break down over time or exposed to fuel, exhaust, etc. Sunlight can do the same.

In place of that I use a construction tape available from H/H or H/D. This is very good stuff and I also use it for heli gyros as it has the correct properties to dampen vibes. You can get it in clear or grey. I prefer the former.

Just remember you will still need a good surface to stick to and clean both with alcohol first.

I am by no means an expert flier, electric foamies, but I exclusively use Velcro. One side on the airframes, and the other on the receivers. Take it for what it's worth, BUT, I have crashed a lot while flying and testing, both gently and others violent, and I have only had a receiver separate from the airframe only ones using Velcro, and that was due to it being a pusher with the receiver as far forward as possible and when the plane realized it was scared of heights at high speeds and self landed itself, all of its organs came forward rather quickly dislodging the receiver.

New222, I used to mount my reciever with velcro, and yes, it held strong. The problem is, with nitro, I feel better wit some foam to help with all the vibration. I know there is no crystal to destroy, but vibration can lead to loose solder joints, and other bad things, so I prefer to use some foam.

On electrics, velcro is plenty strong enough.

Most new 2.4 receivers do not suffer vibes as much, nor do they specify packing in foam like our older 72MHz gear. In fact Futaba warns against that to allow the internals to remain cool.

I found there are different qualities of Hook and Loop, the best available for civvy use, (military is MUCH more tenacious) the roll you can get at Home Depot:

There is enough to last quite a long time and their adhesive is very strong.
