Hot servos?
is it normal for the cyclic servos to get hot? It's been a long time since I've been in the hobby and things have changed a lot. I'm running Spektrum H6040 servos and dual LiFe battery packs. After a 30 minute flight (gotta love the gasser), the cyclic servo cases are hot enough that you don't want to touch them for more than 3-4 seconds. The 30 minute flight uses about 1.3A of 7.7A total capacity. I get it if the metal casing is doing it's job, but like I said, things have changed a lot in two decades and I just want to be sure.

Generally most electronics require proper airflow for cooling to maintain maximum performance. 30minutes is pushing every bit of your system to the max. The servos should be fine but heat kills electronics! How many volts are you putting to the servos and Rx?

Re: Hot servos?
Running dual LiFe packs, 6.6 volts. By the time it goes through the voltage drop of the battery share device, it's about 6.2-6.3V.

I think it's just the very long flight time why they are getting hot. Man how do you stand there for 30min lol my nerves are shot after 5min from all the flipping, rolls and near misses haha

Re: Hot servos?
Lol... I wouldn't normally fly that long. Just wanted to see how long a tank of fuel would last. Still had about a fifth left. Normally, I wouldn't fly more than 10 to 15 minutes. I'll check after a shorter flight.

Re: Hot servos?
Lets keep in mind, I'm not into the wild, flip-floppy, 3D flying. I'm getting back into the hobby after 20 years and am happy with some figure 8's and will maybe look at some loops, rolls, and inverted flight over time LOL. I just like to fly.

Re: Hot servos?
You just converted to FBL. Try turning down the servo frequency and see if it helps. I forget which FBL you went with. On some of them you may need to increase the deadband a little too.
Edit: DERP! It is right there in your sig. I've heard the Futuaba FBL really only plays well with Futaba servos and has a tendency to try and fry anything else attached to them. That was from back when it first came out, so it might have changed with newer firmware. |
Re: Hot servos?
Well, I am upgrading to Futaba BLS351's and a BLS251 tail servo. I have them, just haven't put them in yet.
I'll see what a shorter flight time is like and if they just run warm at that point, that's what I'll stick with to give them some cool down time. |
