gas engines/ crrcpro 26cc
I have just started flying gas and it is better. However there are some infomation that I would like to ask anyone regarding gas engine. On the usual nice weather where the temp. are around 22-26c, the engine starts and runs fine. I am on my 3rd 18oz. tank,(hopefully sufficient breakin time), in the air after running the engine on the bench for about 30mins on a min idle of 2400-2500rpm.
But on days where the temp goes to around 27-30c where the humidity is also high, I do experience a very hard to start engine. Tried to use an electric starter to no avail. I have enclosed the engine but have recently made a hole on top to access both hi/lo needles. Do we have to adjust the needles everytime we fly on humid weather or is there a general setting where the engine would start and run but would be lacking in performance due to the temp/humidity factor? I appreciate any info on the matter... By the way, there is ignition, gas and all power supplies are good. And I have not change any setting on the carb when I run it on the ideal temp of 22/26cc. thanks again... slash60 |
Re: gas engines/ crrcpro 26cc
Hey slash, you mention holes to get at the needle valves, but do you have adequate air in for cooling?
This is taken from their manual: "Engine Cooling - A proper cooling system is vital for any engine. An air cooled engine requires an appropriately sized air intake. Also to keep this air cooling process working the incoming air must be exhausted. Further, the exhaust air outlet should be four times (4X) the size of the cool air intake. Example: . 10 square inches of air intake area would require . 40 square inches of exhaust air outlet area It is up to you to insure that the air flows freely to, over, and away from, the hot cylinder(s) and muffler(s). " If you don't have this, that could be your problem. |

200 Attachment(s)
Generally gasoline engines do not need to have the needles adjusted for varying temperatures (within reason that is, unless you are talking -20 C winter flying to 20 C+ summer temps) like glow engines.
If the engine is hard to start, try opening up the low speed slightly (1/8 turn at a time) untill the engine starts easily. If this is after a run, not the first start of the day, then like JIm stated perhaps the engine is overheating due to inadequate cooling. Gassers, like glow engines, should not be leaned out for every last rpm. Set it to run at least a couple hundred off peak. AJC |
Re: gas engines/ crrcpro 26cc
Slash,
I too have the the CRRC Pro 26cc and have only been able to hand start it two or three times out of 50 flights (And dozens of more start attempts). I use an electric starter and it fires up in a couple rotations, but I just cannot achieve a hand start no matter how I flip it and prime it. Even right after its warmed up, I cannot hand start. It's frustrating. I also have to use a big beefy starting battery because the little field-lead acids don't cut it. I don't know if its fully broken in yet, but the best I get is 7900 rpm on a 17x8 prop. Definately not as good as advertised and others are getting. I also have an evolution 26gt. It starts after one flip every time and spins a 18x6 at 8500 rpm, it's also 3 times the cost, so... |
Re: gas engines/ crrcpro 26cc
My CCRC 26 would not hand start but would fire up with a starter. I noticed if it was too lean on the lo needle, starting was harder. Last month it refused to start , the ignition box would not put out anything, I suspect it was always weak. I replaced the electronic ignition with an Excel from an MT 62.What a difference!! Now hand starting is a breeze and idle is very reliable. The stock Chinese plugs are junk. Start by replacing it with a Champion or NGK. Lots of luck! JR

Thats true. Mine ran very rough until I replaced the plug with a CMR7H from NGK.

Re: gas engines/ crrcpro 26cc
Guys, I read each of your responses and I am thankful for all your feedbacks. Here are my reply to each one .
Jim: I made sure that the exhaust opening is 4x the size of the intake, that was the first thing I made sure. I know cooling air must have an exit point out or else its like a convection oven inside the cowl. Thanks for the input. AJholic: I just made the holes for adjusting the needles after the last flight. I will make the adjustment you mentioned on my next flight and see how it affects everything. ty. Jeff:I do not know if that is all this engine can give regarding rpm but in the field other crrc26 owners are getting 7200-7900rpm on a xoar 17x8.The seller of the engine says though that we can still get some more rpm, maybe 200-300 with some fine tuning and prop combination. bullwhip: my ignition seems ok ,as i have said when the temp are around 22-25C. But again you may have a valid point since your's started easily after replacing the cdi. I will look into the cost of a better ignition plus I will definitely buy the ngk plug cmr7h. To sum it all up, I appreciate all the input that you all have mentioned and will try each one to see which would remedy this condition. I feel the fix maybe on the cdi but on starting it manually by flipping ,I do not have any problem, once choked and slightly flooded, it would start on the third flip of the prop. I will try all of your advices one at a time and see which one cures the problem so I can post a feedback for the next gasser who might come across this problem....again guys ..thanks a lot for the help. slash60 |
