Starter switch

I have a sullivan starter and it works pretty good most of the time but there are times when I press the switch to use it I have to make several attempts to make to switch to work. Usually I take the starter apart and clean the switch with sand paper then it works great again. Switch consist of two brass metal plates separated by a foam spacer, to use you compress the rubber otter jacket which squeezes the foam separator then the brass contacts meet to start the motor [very cheaply made in my opinion] My question has anyone got a better way or solution to replace this switch? Remember it must start and shut off quickly for safety reasons

How about a horn button(chrome one with black button) found at most Canadian tire or NAPA stores. I've got an older starter here and that's what it was retro-fitted with.

Have you tried contact cleaner?

This will not only clean the contact points but will also protect against corrosion.

Try an electronics supply/repair or Radio shack.

switch

I retrofitted my old starter with a spst push button switch. I took a piece of u shaped aluminum and bolted that to the starter (it originally had the cheaply made switch that you mention) then i bolted the switch to the tube. It worked great and cost about 3 or 4$.

ya, i agree. i only use starter if i can't get it to go with the stick. much easier on engine internals.

one flip usually does it, especially in this heat.

I had the same problem last year with my Sullivan starter. I replaced the switch with a new switch from Sullivan. The new switch has a set of contact points in it and it seems to be more robust than the original.
Here is the part number that I used, from Sullivan's web page.

Starter switch for S600/S601Hi-Tork S98243short $4.38 each

I hope that this helps

i have what seems o be a dead spot on my starter... do you think it's the switch?

i press the button but nothing happens... i give it a quick spin by hand and the starter then turns...

if it's not the switch. how would you go about fixing that..

The first thing is to understand is that I was talking about a Sullivan starter and therefore I will assume that yours is a Sullivan as well. You should look at the switch and the cable connections. It may be something as simple as a bad connection at the banana plugs or battery clips or the switch may be worn out. A worn switch can sometimes be cleaned up and made to work again for a while. Giving the starter a spin by hand may make it go but the problem if not in one of the areas that I described, cable connectors or switch, would then be in the motor itself, and I cannot tell you how to fix it.

Let me know how things work out for you.

All the best
