changing JR xf421 Tx crystal into a jrxf622 Tx
Can this be done? I bought the P-51 trainer and it came with the 421. The instructor at my club asked if it (the 421) was capable of dual rates (which it isnt). The 622 is....now...can I just change the tx crystal out for the one that is in the 421 and now use the 622 with my P-51? I would love to since the 622 has a few more bells on it that I like (dual rates....flaps....etc)

There is no simple answer to that. both radios are JR, so the crystal will be the same. what channels are they?
Now if you lived in the USA the answer would be NO WAY. as it would need to go back to horizon to be retuned.as per FCC regs. Unless they are modules. which can be replaced no problems. Here in Canada some people do change them and say no problems but it is still recommended to have the radio checked out. why not just replace the RX crystal instead? |
John,
It is best to call Horizon Hobby and speak to a JR customer serv ice rep. as there is no simple answer for this question. Here is why, some people say to never change a transmitter crystal without retuning the transmitter to the new frequency of the new crystal. This is what I believe to be the best course of action. Now some people have changed their crystal and not had the transmitter retuned and have had no problems. Thats why it is best to ask JR directly for what they recommend. |
confusion about crystals
Ok, I appreciate the responses....however now I have a new question to go along with the original. What do you all mean by "modules" vs the other type?
John |
A module is used mainly on the 10X. 9303, 8103,6102 they are removable in about a 2x4 plastic case, from the back of the radio, you can replace these with a Synthesized module or with modules of another channel without having any re tuning done,
The 421 622 you can see the crystal in the back case and they are usually glued in position. |
module or not?
could someone post a photo of what you mean by a module? My radios (xf421 and xf622) have items in the back that have frequency number and channel number on them....and they are removable. They are about 1/2" X 3/4" and on the side is written "type 72-7"
What are the repercussions if I just swap them and try to fly? Cheers John |
John,
I am Futaba but from the numbers you gave,(72-7) are the crystal type. I have changed tran. crystals but do not get very far from the original freq. that it was tuned at. The best advise was to phone JR but if you do change then do a range check before removing and after. Just to see that you don't lose any range. John |
I think you'd be much safer to change the receiver crystal. They generally come without one, and you just install whatever you need. The reason everone is being so cautious on this topic is that it is THE link between you and your plane. The transmitter may be "set" to work the best with a certain"channel". Now, it may work ok with a different channel crystal, but it may not be 100%. I wouldn't want to fly if I had any doubt about my signal.
Does anyone see a problem with changing the receiver crystal? Perhaps a call to Horizon would still be in order. They would know best, as they work on the stuff every day. Good Luck. Mike |
If you are like me, you have several receiver's on the same freq. and it is cheaper to change the transmitter. If so let us know. If only 1 receiver then the receiver crystal is the best part to change. You did not mention what freq's you wanted to change to. Let us know the crystal type and freq. you want to go to? I may be able to help in that way.
