Help with WalMart Foam Glider RC Modification

1 Attachment(s)
Hi,

Some time ago I purchased an Air Hoggs foam glider from WalMart. My intention was to convert the glider to an RC plane in my spare time using easily available components (except for radio and power system) and make an easily built plane as inexpensive as possible. I will post the build with pictures when complete.

I searched the web and found many projects, but could find nothing like what I had in mind.

What I have done so far:
Straightened swept wing so trailing edge is straight.
Re-enforced the wing.
Cut out wing saddle and mounted wing so wing can be mounted with nylon bolts
Removed most of the dihedral
Cut and renforced horizontal stab and elevator

At this point I want to start figuring out where to mount the motor, and where to place the battery, electronics and motor.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding the following?

Specifically, I'm about to add ailerons but I'm not quite sure whether to cut the outboard trailing edges to use full strip ailerons, or only use partial ailerons where there is an opening at the back of the wing. See picture for reference.

Second, I'm also about to add the motor and I'm planning to use a Stryker motor (this may change). Should I mount the motor on the nose? or should I build a pylon for the motor? I have no experience in building motor pylons and if this is the choice, I will need assistance with this.

I appreciate any input and suggestions. Thanks for your help.

Hi Wayne,

I had the same glider here also. I researched it as well but never did much with it. From the info and flights that I viewed , it appeared that the pylon method was the best and
the ducted fan version was also good. Most however noted that the ailerons were not a
good idea and did not funtion well. I think because of the larger wingspan.....if you clip, the wings, it may be a better story. Also, I would probably find a smaller weight outrunner than using the Stryker motor...to keep the weight down to a minimum.

Hi Cassat,

I too felt the ailerons would not be responsive mainly due to the amount of dihedral, that is why I remove almost all of the dihedral. Now that I know the ailerons were not very responsive, I'll also put full strip ailerons.

I'll do some research on how to make a pylon for electric motors, I don't expect it will be too hard.

Thanks for your input.

Hi,

I found this site that has many ideas on converting the WallMart Titian, you may want to take a look.
