Engine Size For Yak 54

I would like to install a gas engine in a CMP Yak 54. The plane weights 11.5 pounds and has a wing span of 72". I 'm thinking of the Zenoah G26.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

moe....In my experience with planes in the 68" to 75" size is you're better off with glow...You will add a minimum of 1 1\2 lbs. to the weight of the airplane....On an 11 lb airframe that's alot...Although they are still very flyable, the wing loading suffers greatly....you will notice while doing manoeuvers and landing....I hate glow engines and have tried gas engines in many small planes and it never works out...In an aerobatic palne such as the Yak get a Saito 180 or 220..YS has a140 sport and a 160DZ which is simply awesome...OS is coming out with a 200 4 stoke very very shortly and of course their 160 2 stroke is an awesome motor..

My $0.02

I agree wholeheartedly with wingburner. Pound for pound glow motors produce way more power until about 50cc. I personally would not consider gas till the 28- 30% size in an aerobatic plane. I imagine the yak you are referring to is about 25% or less

Ya, what they said. :D

The G26 is waaay too heavy for that airframe.

Look at the O.S. 160, Moki 1.80 or 2.10, or 4 stroke Saito 1.80 or 2.20.

If you want gas, look at the lighter MVVS products.

No more

No more glow for me since I replace my saito 220 for a DA50 on my H9 260 extra 27% . If you insist to put a glow motor , don't go under power , it's too boring ! My saito is almost bran new; send me an email if you want it for half price. But why you don't look at fuji 43 ei or a bit less ? I have a fuji 50EI on a Cap 232 (80'' and 14.5 pounds) and it goes super , exept little interference problem I still have. So , make your choice Moe ! See you ! Paul B.

Power won't always payoff weight penalty.

I had a Cub that ran pretty nicely with a 40. I saw a fellow flyer with a 60 in a similar Cub and I liked the look of it so I bought a 60. I had to weight the tail a bit (not much), but the total weight increase made it much worse to fly. Landings became scary, and the standard servos didn't have as much authority. All that over a few ounces.

The other issue is that a lot of the 3D planes are not built to handle more than their rated weight / power. They tend to fall apart in the air if you push them too fast or too hard.

I don't miss glow fuel but when I changed engines, I changed planes too.

Lots to consider! All the previous comments seem logical.
