Low cost HK Quanum FPV kit
 

A flying buddy of mine of limited means has long wanted to get into FPV flying. But this aspect of the hobby has always been a bit out of reach. Only a few years ago it would easily cost a good $700 or so to get set up with vtx/vrx a good camera and some goggles and antennas

but back in mid 2014 HObbyking came out with the Quanum goggle kit .. for $30 USD. and folks embraced it. It worked and was not terrible at all.

So recently my flying buddy order up one of the complete Hobbyking kits, with these basic goggles. And he asked me to assemble it and test it for him.

It is all-DIY stuff. Not exactly plug and play. But comes with a decent CCD camera, and push button vtx/vrx. And some CP antennas of unknown quality (but the cheap CP antennas have been vastly improving since 3 years ago when they first appeared) Cost was under $150 I think. The goggles kit comes in very much DIY form. Has a ton of connectors adding up to heavy spaghetti wiring. So I spliced it all down to a short wiring harness. This way it can be all-in-one goggles, with a small lipo velcroed to one side, vRx on the other side

The vtx and camera was straight forward. But I made an LC filter and added a EOSD to monitor voltage and timer on screen.

It took a couple hours work to get it the way I recommend doing it. But you could assemble this without any splicing and filter for maybe 30 minutes work. Worked perfect on first try. Maiden flight maybe tonight (using his old Beaver)

That's about the same setup I'm running right now. Except it's on an Emax Nighthawk 280. I do have that same beaver also, and I might setup for fpv also. I'm sure your friend will have a great time with it. The only thing I would add is maybe put a top headstrap on those goggles. Mine seem heavy with my 632 mounted on them and push down on my nose. Great job setting that up.

yes the 632 is darned heavy

I have an old RC305 here (8ch) I might have him try. Can swap it out in 5 seconds. It weighs about 1/3 as much. But the push button 32ch diversity receiver ('632') in the kit is way easier to use.

I am going to give him some sponge adhesive weather stripping for the head seal. But I wanted him to try it on first so it is built for his skull and not mine.

True. That's what I had on mine originally, a 8ch Boscam, much lighter. Needed a new one to communicate with my Nighthawk. A lot heavier though. Also I trimmed mine around the nose, little bit a time until it was a perfect fit then used 1/2 inch adhesive weather stripping around the entire perimeter. Quite comfortable now. Also you may have to have him play with the different lenses that best match his eyes.

I went for V2 of the Quanum headset. It has a bigger display, a "goggle glove", and a few other improvements over the V1. I didn't have to change wire lengths for everything to be reasonable, but it still requires a bit of DIY work. The three Fresnel lenses supplied, which are supposed to be different magnifications, are all the same. I am adding better padding and maybe a different lens system.

That's funny. I just ordered the V2 Pro a few days ago. Yes I think they've gone up. Think I paid over$120 shipped with a lipo. Oh well, I think it'll be worth it.

I took a glance at the V2 an V2 pro. Definitely looks more evolved. You simply use the included simple short AV patch cable from vRx->LCD instead of the mess that came with the V1 which I had to work to eliminate.

And the lCD is higher resolution. Head band more integrated. looks great!

I might even like a V2 instead of my FS Dominators. maybe. Like how I could use reading glasses with it. Though I really like the tiny size of Fatsharks/Boscam goggles - but I have invested about $400 each!

$120 for a complete kit. That is frankly worthy of my applause! There have been 'FPV combos' around for years. but none were complete enough, nor as simple and crazy-inexpensive as this. Used to be around $550usd for a combo kit, with old-gen Fatsharks that suck. If anyone out there is into RC flying, such a low cost beginner system that works is a no brainer imho.

I have the V2, and I can wear prescription glasses with it. I added padding off a cheap pair of eBay goggles to make it more comfortable.

But! I find wearing glasses with it makes me motion-sick for some reason. I tried it without any lenses, just 3+ reading glasses, and I lasted about one minute. It wasn't as bad with a lens and my prescription reading glasses. It seems to work better for me with just a better quality, higher magnification Fresnel lens. I have the Pro lenses, but I don't find them that great either.

I have moved the monitor to the outside of the V2 housing to get a bit more distance to the screen.

I have good distance vision still, but need 1.5x reading glasses for up close. I'm finding FPV a bit of a struggle.

HUH, that doesn't sound to promising:(...fortunately at least I am only single vision

Almost makes me think I'd be fine and almost better off with the fatsharks then and the magnification lenses they use or whatever it is(I'm guessing this is actually the Fresnel lens you spoke of)
