Nylon or Steel clevise
Just wondering what everyone uses for clevises on their non-engine hookups - steel or plastic? I'm curious if a steel clevise will wear out a plastic control horn quicker than a plastic clevise would. Thanks in advance.

used both. as long as you have a fuel-tube "keeper" on the clevis, either works just fine. The only reservation with the plastic that I have is that the little nib that goes thru the hole in the horn might weaken and/or break off at some distant point (or through the use of "user brute force" in forcing it through the hole instead of easy does it.

plastic clevise - for engine ONLY!!!!
I lost a plane because the pin on the plastic BROKE..... while doing a FLAT SPIN... and it just kept on spinning into the ground. Now if your on a park flyer / small glider or other SLOW plane plastic is OK. BUT is it worth saving $5.00 to replace ALL the plastic with metal??? |
Metal clevises on everything except my smaller engines.
Lost 2 planes years ago due to breaking plastic clevises and swore I would never use one again! Just my 2 cents. |
I always use metal clevises. I personally have never had a problem with the metal pins causing a problem on the plastic control horns. I usually, especially on larger planes, replace the control horns with the larger heavy duty plastic horns ( the black ones ) All in all the setup is pretty strong and have never had one break or wear loose!

I actually have quite a few planes with plastic clevises - generally a lot of small planes (.15 and under) but I know I have used them in some larger planes (up to .40) and havent had any break on me that I can remember... luckY? Maybe! In the past number of years I prefer Sullivan metal clevises on anything larger. I like the clip they come with.
