Old Dave Platt Spitfire build

Hi folks,

I have an interesting question for those whom have had the pleasure of building and or flying a Dave Platt Spitfire. I am talking about the mid 70's kit, 65" wing span

My question is, would a new ASP 61 4stroke fly this plane well or should I bump it up to a 90 4stroke? I do plan on having mech. retracts and am considering glassing and painting the plane.

Go with the 90 4 stroke, you will need the power. A Saito 100 would be perfect for it too, & Saito's are excelent engines also.

Hi

I am most certainly ain,t going to knock what Charles has said .

But, I have this plane with a 65 in it . The plane was given to me , the engine is a 65 . The owner , said that it went like a bat out of hell . And may I remind you , this is a Dave Plate kit . Kits are not made like this to-day . The balsa is extremly lite , and strong .

I have no doubt about what the previous own has told me , he,s a very accomplished flyer and pilot .

Like Charles said the four strokes would do the job absolutely .

If you're going four stroke the .90 would be the way to go. I don`t think you`d be happy with the 4-stroke 61.

I flew one of those back then with a two stroke os.61 and it was an excellent and powerful airplane. probably my all time favorite. fast and groovy and slowed nicely for landing. retracts are absolutely necessary in this beauty IMHO. :)

you`ll love it!!

Thank you all for your replies. I set out the plans to show the full size of the wing, I placed the semi completed fuse on them and wow. This plane is bigger then I thought. Time for a 90

Now.. I need to find something to put the 61 into.......:p

61 2 stroke...Yes.. 61 FOUR STROKE?? Absolutely NO WAY!

I am glad to hear you are going with the 90FS

Well, it's been awhile since I said anything about this build, been busy. However, its coming along nicely. Going with a magnum 91 fourstroke engine, robart air/spring retracts and am going to glass and paint her when ready. Right now I am just finishing up the building to get to the sanding and forming of the fuse/wing. But I wanted to take some pics, so I pinned/set everything together. I swear I fall deeper in love with this plane the farther along I get. I just hope it flys as well as the DavePlatt/Pica P-51A kit I had years ago.

Don't you have a garbage can? Come on... you've got more class than to run one of those!

Just foolin' ! You are going to love the sound & torque of that 4 stroke!

The build is shaping up nicely! Is "glass" needed on these birds? Does add a bit of beef so if the structure is too week without it ... go for it!
