requesting feedback from "Glow" guys"

I just finished cowling my Saito 4C very neatly into an arf j3 cub 40size and would like to know how reliable are these Remote glow plug starters that attach semi-permanently to the glow plug.
see link

If there is another way without having to drill an access hole on the underside of the cowl to clip on the glow heater I would give it a try first.

Any feedback much appreciated.

They always seem to vibrate off

This may have not been advisable, but I soldered mine the top of the glow plug. Time to repair, I just heated it up and put a new one on. I did not have any issues. As I said, I'm sure guys wiser than me would not approve.

Sorry, replace, not repair.

I have not used this style but it looks rugged enough. It's very important that you secure the wiring so it does not flex, lots of tie wraps.

My twin has wires soldered to small wheel collars and then you just slip them over the glow plug and tighten them up....very easy to change...works great.

That's the best way Pete. Never had one come off with that setup.
Get the twin running reliably yet?

Bill

No, not really.

I have been using that style of glow end for years with no problems. Only one ever broke internally at the brass cutout for the plug tip. Sometimes cutting down the cup height is required to fit certain head pocket designs.

Note that I generally purchase just the plug end and leads at Toledo and fab up the igniter end from old glow plugs if cannot find the countersunk type with the cover.

You should also concern yourself with adequate cooling when cowling a 4-stroke. Unlike their 2-stroke brothers there is no internal cooling charge so external cooling is even more critical.

I normally run my installations without the cowl for a few flights to ensure everything is correct and to provide a baseline. If things change once cowled there is only one thing that caused it and easier to solve.

Are you able to post some pics of the installation?

ps. Ballast, fixed your link.
