FPV illegal in Canada?

I've been in RC for many years (purely fixed wing) and have been trying to resist this FPV thing for a little while now but have finally given in. ;)

So ... I've been reading and researching this firehose of information for the last few weeks and have finally decided to take the plunge. HOWEVER ... I've just gotten the impression that using a transmitter over 25mW is illegal in Canada? :(

I was looking at the 5.8 GHz 600mW products (primarily) and the 200mW products so how does this whole FPV racing (or just mucking about in a park for that matter) work in Canada if its illegal? :(

Re: FPV illegal in Canada?

No, its not illegal.

You just have to conform to Industry Canada (IC) requirements.

To operate over 25 mw you need to have your HAM licence.
Not hard to do and better peace of mind if you do decide to get it.

Otherwise, the other option is to fly "under the supervision" of another member who is ham licensed. As long as you have a ham licensed guy in your group, you should be OK.

At our club, several of us are ham licensed now, including myself. So any FPV operations that take place at our club field conforms to MAAC FPV guidelines and IC regulations.

Ok so ...

1. Theoretically I'm fine to fly with a 25mw transmitter without a HAM licence?

2. With a HAM license up to what power levels am I allowed to use?

This link might give some insight on what is legally required as well and the need for IC (Industry Canada)approved stuff for use in Canada.
Happy reading

If you go here and practice the exam over and over until you score high enough to pass then find someone who can sit you through your real exam. There are only 1000 questions and 100 are randomly chosen for the exam.

According to this web site NG hobbies who are retailers of FPV equipt. here in the GTA
http://www.nghobbies.com/cart/index....8#.Vk-MnHarSUk
you will need a Ham license when using this level of transmission power.
As stated previously, do the exam and forget about limiting yourself. Good luck

correction do the exam and learn how to limit your transmissions to only the amount necessary

:)

(ie none of this 1500mW transmitter nonsense)

glad to see so many folks on here also have HAM. It wasn't too hard, have had mine for 3 years now.

Oh, and The OP can fly FPV without a HAM license, if he flies with a licensed HAM person present and overseeing the radio transmissions. A new miniquad racing club srpouted up recently and they secured MAAC insurance for regular events. But no one has HAM other than me, so I guess I am obliged to show up to every event for a while yet, as it is a MAAC requirement :D

Didn't he mean there is a 1000 question pool from which are randomly drawn 100 to make the test?
