First Indoor Electric Airplane

Totally new to electric flying and wanted to start getting set up for indoor winter flying to keep up my skills and learn 3D flying. Can anyone suggest a popular and excellent aircraft that is not too big but big enough, crash proof and would complement the skills I am looking to improve and hone. I currently own an LT40, Pulse and Funtana glow fleet.

From my own personal experience, "indoor" and "crashproof" shouldn't be in the same sentence...lol

But seriously, I started with some scratch built foamys. There's lots of free plans on the internet, and you can get some really cheap light gear for them too. A couple of sheets of 3mm depron will get you at least 2 planes anyway.

If your not into scratch building, I have experience with the Eflight Extra 260 (a tad heavy by today's standards), the Eflight Enticement (really slow precise flier) and my latest foamy is the great planes Yak 54. The yak is by far my favorite so far. The best for all out freestyle IMHO.

There a tons of good indoor 3D kits out there now. A good rule of thumb is 5-7oz, and you'll have a sweet flier. Here's a few links for you to get some ideas of gear to use.

I've been using this motor for 3 seasons on 3S and an 8x4 GWS prop. Awesome performance.

Again, this motor is great on 3S and an 8x4 prop. A few guys (including me) are using these.

I have 4 of these packs and 2 more on order. Need I say more

Any of the 6g servos are a good choice. There's lots to choose from out there today. And lastly, I use a Castle Creations Phx 10 for all my stuff. They're a little more pricey, but you can't beat the programming features.

I hope the info helps you out some. I've been flying indoors for 5 seasons now, this year will make 6. And don't forget, 2 bottle of foam safe ca never hurt no one lololol.

Cheers
Greg

You may want to look at an RC Bug from Lightflite

http://www.lightflite.com/

It's made of carbon fibre and EPP foam. Not indestructable but pretty darn close :)

Been flying mine for 2 indoor seasons and it's a hoot.

Guys thanks for taking the time to reply. The Yak 54 looks right up my alley as I am more into a realistic looking aircraft but the "bug" looks like something my son is into. I will investigate further. Many thanks.

Re: First Indoor Electric Airplane

Different types of foam. It is how they are made and what qualities they have. Depron brand name for polystyrene.
EPP is Expanded polypropylene.
All these can be found on the web.
Youtube has a lot of links as well.

What are the brand names for the EPP and Depron? Is this something that needs special order or can I buy from Home Depot, Office Depot, or LHS?

You are better off to have two years flying experience with a size 40 trainer before you tackle these type of airplanes. They make it look so easy on YouTube, but it is not that easy to fly.

Winter is coming and I'm looking to get into indoor flying this year but know nothing about these little planes.
The area I would be flying in is smallish...about the size of half a gym with a lower ceiling than a gym.
I would be interested to know what a good plane would be...not necessarily for a beginner as I fly outdoors. Would I be able to use my Spektrum 2.4 RX...or are they too big for these little planes?
