Do you need the recoil spring in landing gear?

So, I'm building the TF P-51 ARF and I only have a short distance that I could unlikely get the recoil spring into. In fact, I'm about 99% sure I can't get it in there. Maybe I can bend a new one to a smaller radius but thats about my last resort. What are the odds of doing significantly more damage to the plane by not putting a recoil spring on the gear? I'm using robostruts or this wouldn't be an issue.
