The only timing you need to know is the mark on the pulley needs to be either at the top or bottom (12 or 6 oclock - doesnt matter which) when the piston is at TDC (crankpin at 12 oclock).
The other marks are not important and I dont believe stock. I have owned and run 2 T4-40's and 4 T4-80's, they are a little weak compared to modern engines but do sound neat and have a cool factor all their own!
