Varsol works well.
Actually when I was an apprentice I worked with one gentleman that kept all his stones in varsol for storage. There was never a problem with them gumming up. Although the lids on the cans he kept them in kept deforming over time.
I've had a Rapala version of that one for fishing for at least 10 years now, and it still gives a nice edge to my fillet knife.
