I just make sure they are stored charged, and I ensure there is no way they can become shorted or damaged in storage.

My methods vary, but the intent is always the same.

I have abused batteries, as have guys I fly with. I have heard of a couple instances, and they always come down to the same thing. Either overcharging, shorts in the battery leads, or puncturing a cell.
