Sorry to see this happen to you, but unfortunately, there is no deal until both sides agree.
He (the seller) may sell at any time to any purchaser, as long as he has not accepted an offerh.

You can protect yourself somewhat by being very clear in your offer.
You can say something like, "I'll take it at your price, subject to final inspection, please reply within 8hrs with your acceptance"
Even then, there is no deal until he agrees. Private persons are not bound by a "code of ethics", although most people try to be as ethical as possible. Good manners is another issue.
Also, the seller is not required to inform you of other offers, he could have had 10 offers before yours. He really should give yoy the courtesy of informing you that your offer was not accepted as soon as possible.
Him not answering you was very poor manners!

Anyway, I hope you find a plane for your dad!
