I have not read through this whole thread so i apologize if I am duplicating the gist of any posts...

Prices in 1977 when I started (remember these are 1977 dollars)

4 channel am radios that did not work well and no options like reversing etc.....$500
Monocote - $14.99 per roll
Econocote - $11.99 per roll
O.S 40 FSR engine - $115
Zap CA one ounce - $12.99
Sullivan Std. Starter - $65 - $75

Trainer pkg, built and ready to go - around $500 invested.

In short, folks, the hobby is a bargain today compared to when some of us 'old' guys started.
