Actually Eric, its a combonation of both. The Grass friendly jets tend to have trailing link gear with larger dia tires. Not the very complicated scale gear that cost a fortune and is easily damaged by the banging and bumps you get from sod. In addition the engines sit higher up on the airframe and stand less chance of burning the grass. Its been my experience, that the only time the grass gets burnt from my Sprint jet,(I have over 65 flights on sod) is when the plane is at a full stop and I goto full throttle. I can, and do, taxie on the grass all the time and never burn the grass. The trick is to add just enough power to get it moving and then go full throttle. If I can, I will use a barren peice of land and use that for the run up.
