For the last couple of my dogfighters, I used my hot glue gun and it has been holding OK. The gun is an Arrow which I got from Home Depot. You can get glue sticks with slower set-up so you have a bit more time when assembling.
I mark the parts for alignment, put a generous bead on the joint, assemble and hold and then run a fillet on overlap edges (eg: where tailfeathers meet the fuselage or where the upper/lower wing panels overlap).
