Yeah, big hit&miss..
Out on the Wet Coast, there was/is an engine manufacturer called Easthope. Some of these beasts were near 5' tall, and the starter was a brass handle that flipped out of the flywheel. The engines used to propel large fishboats (with beautiful hulls!) at ~5kts, forever it seemed. It was designed during the days of the Model T, and parts were available until at least the 70s, maybe even now.
I have been asked to restore a farm engine for the local museum in my spare time(!!!), and it ain't new either. Starting this horizontal single has to do with giving the flywheel a kick in the right direction...
