Before removing it, try mounting it vertical such that the outlet is at the top. That should automatically purge the air as soon as fuel starts to flow in the start up sequence.

Running filter less is asking for trouble in my opinion. It may run for a bit, but it doesn't take much crap to plug an injector or worse yet the lube restrictor... It should also definitely go between the turbine and the fuel pump to absorb the metallic bits shedding from the gears under normal operation.
